5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden gem, 6 Aug 2005

This is an incredibly beautiful record. Richard has always been a particularly strong singer and songwriter but this release is astounding, even by his own standards.
By moving from America to Buenos Aires he seems to have taken on just enough of the culture to add depth to his musical landscapes without making the songs "difficult" as sometimes happens in such cases.
There are no weak songs here. They follow each other in such a natural progression that when they finish all you want to do is to listen to them again. Each time you do, another hidden treasure is unlocked.
I really can't recommend this highly enough. If you haven't heard any of Richard's music before, a good starting point is "Courier", his previous issue. It lets you catch up on his back catalogue and, although recorded in concert, the standard of musicianshop is so high it makes no difference.
One of the best contemporary musicians in his field, this man's music deserves a far wider audience and Vuelta is as good as it gets.

I can only agree wholeheartedly with john james's review. He uses overused words like astounding and incredibly beautiful but in this case they are fully justified.

I've got most of Shindell's CDs and the first thing to say is he has a wonderful deep voice and he can write music that his little surprises in them. His lyrics are always thoughtful too. All his other albums have a few stand out songs, some OK ones and some that after a few listens I don't want to hear anymore. They also include a range of acoustic numbers and more band type heavier songs. None are albums that I can play right through without skipping a track; such albums are rare in my experience. Indeed, I intend to make a 'Best of Richard Shindell' CD taking songs from these other albums. However, I won't be taking any from Vuelta - all the songs would be required.

With Veulta, I can play it in its entirety. It has a relatively low key tempo throughout, which I like, a mostly acoustic sound but with enough bass and a bit of electrics (some lovely pedal steel in places) to keep the sound solid but still airy, and some subtle percussion and harmonies. All in all, beautiful music with those little surprises. On regular playing and therefore becoming familiar with the surprises, these then give me that shiver of anticipation.

For me, having owned and played this CD for over a year, this is the perfect album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Smile and a Story, 8 Jan 2012

I discovered Richard Shindler after hearing his song, 'You Stay Here' on a Show Of Hands CD. So I bought his latest 'Not Far Now'. None of the songs matched that but it was still pretty good. It was a pleasant surprise to find Shindler as the support act on the last Show Of Hands tour in which he played a couple of songs from 'Vuelta' - 'There Goes Mavis' and 'The Last Fare Of The Day'. That caused me to seek this album out. It was a search well worthwhile. Shame it's not more easily available. 'Che Guevara T-Shirt' and 'Hazel's House' are other gems. Shindler does not contemplate his own navel but has a combination of sadness and humour that few other current singer-songwriters can match. He's an intelligent and thought-provoking (but not preachy) storyteller. If you like Randy Newman, Dar Williams, Richard Thompson, Dory Previn, Harry Chapin or Tom Russell, you'll like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soft folk with latin flavour, 17 Oct 2011
This review is from: Vuelta (Audio CD)
If you like good songs,well-arranged (with a great Argentinian back-up band),and nicely played and sung in a laid-back way this is for you. If you like energy and drive it's not. I bought the CD on the strength of hearing a track on Mike Harding's Radio 2 show and am not disappointed. Shindell writes great songs reminiscent of 70's Bob Dylan but just lacks that bit of bite that would give the disc 5 stars. Too laid-back for me.
