This review is from: J.S. Bach: The Well-tempered Clavier, Book I (2 CDs) (MP3 Download)
Bach's music is a whole world within five octaves. I've loved these pieces perhaps more than any other playing them myself on the piano and listening to many recordings. To my ears neither the piano nor the harpsichord seems quite right in this music. But on the delicate and gently resonant clavichord RK makes Bach's counterpoint tell. The same goes incidentally for the Book II recording Bach: The Well-tempered Clavier, Book II. Somehow the quiet guitar like tone never sounds underpowered and the bass can sometimes growl with startling ferocity. It also allows this player a wonderful spontaneity, sometimes he gently swings the rhythm, elsewhere he races along joyfully without ever blurring the counterpoint. This is music and music making you listen to when all else seems jaded and all you otherwise want to hear is silence.
