5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Butterfly, Deeply Involved., 25 Aug 2009

Sinopoli was not everybody's idea of a wonderful conductor, he could seem perverse in some music. This set is, however, really excellent. The sound is first rate, rich, very clear and dramatic. The orchestra are fully committed, and of the first waters. Freni is a superb Butterfly, full in tone, involved and passionate. Carreras is excellent as Pinkerton, again, rich and engaging. Pons makes a first rate Sharpless.
Some of the tempi are on the sedate side, but this only serves to emphasise the qualities of the music, given that the weight of sound is deep. The performance leaves one drained at the end, a majestic recording!

I bought this as a present, so haven't listened to it. It arrived in very good time, and the person i bought it for loves it.
