Perfect fare for leaving the cares of the world behind
on 19 January 2002
This is a beautifully crafted CD from the New World Music stable, although I am not sure whether entitling it 'Bali' is not somewhat of a misnomer. It employs the sounds of nature, particularly water, along with a predominantly flute based melodic style. It is more reminiscent of the Japanese Shakuhachi flute music than the traditional gamelan style of the Far East, although this influence does start to come in about midway through the CD. I don't wish that to come across as in any way critical, for it is not meant to be, the music picks you up in the first few bars and wafts you away to a place of far greater peace and serenity. To that end it has achieved its stated aim of being 'reflections of a tranquil paradise'. It is quite different in style to the other Bali available by Jalan Jalan, which does employ the gamelan base, although both have definite Western influences and are equally impressive and deserving of a home in anybody's CD library who wants a couple of hours of R & R. Try them both - you won't be disappointed.
