Nope bit boring sorry... buy "The Nephilim" album intead
on 16 January 2013
Sorry it's boring and it all sounds too similar and bland for me when compared to their other albums. I can still listen to all the other stuff between Gehenna and Psychonaut and love it... just not Elizium !
After early singles created a loyal fanatical following they cemented their fame with the superb Dawnrazor album which was quite varied in its sound and songwriting. They followed this with the brilliant Nephilim album, which again was quite varied with some heavier songs (the shape of more recent things to come...) and this gave them a wider appeal and success WITHOUT selling out. This was their finest vinyl hour and I waited with bated breath for their next offering.
Now I have an extremely varied taste in music and love a lot of the Nephilims stuff especially seeing them live. When I first listened to it I played it 3 times and it didnt grow on me and I just didnt like it much. I was surprised at this and bitterly disappointed too ! The track For her Light is good but I just don't see the appeal, even Sumerland bores me to death... its all too bland and wishy washy for me, too drifty, ethereal and soft. Now I like ethereal and soft usually but it doesnt suit the bands sound, no inventiveness for me, all the same... the Nephilim need edgyness and mystery. The mystery is how they ever made it and the mixing is rubbish too, by far the worst contrast and bass soundmixing i have ever heard on vinyl, not just on CD.
Their next release around that time i bought was "Psychonaut", which was a brilliant single (reminds me of Moonchild's strong intent) and I hoped they would go that way... but they split and all went other ways. Maybe their creative time in the "mystery goth" style was spent or maybe the genre was spent I don't know, but I know i would recommend The Nephilim and Dawnrazor or a couple of singles instead.
