Less rickety and obscure than The Fall's early works, this collection compiles 17 tracks from the Brix Smith era. It's streamlined and solid throughout, often catchy, especially in the case of beat-driven tracks like 'Cruiser's Creek', 'Hit the North' and 'Big New Prinz'. Brix's vocals sweeten things a great deal, a tuneful contrast to her then husband's hectoring delivery. Her vocals also provide form to these songs in tandem with the memorable lead lines of keyboard and guitar.

I don't know much of The Fall's massive back catalogue (going back almost 35 years through an ever-shifting lineup), but of what I've heard this is the most consistently enjoyable and a good place to start. Standout studio albums of this period include the vaunted 'This Nation's Saving Grace', the concise and driven 'The Frenz Experiment' and my personal favourite, the moody and resonant 'Bend Sinister'.
