5.0 out of 5 stars Classic. Brilliant. Will be revered by future generations, 20 May 2001
This review is from: Painful (Audio CD)
You won't get me enthusing about music very easily. This record is an exception. Largely neglected by the public (or most music critics), Yo La Tengo have built up a back catalogue of records that will, possibly, some day establish them as one of the great rock bands of the 1990s. Well, hopefully, anyway.
Painful, released in 1993, has been on top of my list of favourite records for a long time now, and has never ever become boring. Sporting a more direct approach than on their later albums, this is reminiscent of My Bloody Vanlentine vs. Sonic Youth, but played with clearly more emotion (and, alas, expertise) than either of the other groups ever had.
The quiet songs are intense, and so are the loud ones; a direct comparison between the two versions of "Big Day Coming" easily proves that both are winners. Heck, even the instrumental track at the end ("I Heard You Looking") is great.
This record should be in everybody's collection. Even if they have only one record.

5.0 out of 5 stars I HEARD YOU LOOKING, 10 Aug. 2001

Buy This before you die to hear "I Heard You Looking". This instrumental is 7 joyfull minutes of the best riff ever played on the electrical guitar over and over again. Sometimes fading, sometimes exploding, but always the same grin-inducing riff. If I only had 10 minutes left to live. I'd play this. And then I'd start playing it again.

This is where I first heard Yo La Tengo..its a brilliant album. Yes, the influences of other bands are here, most notably the Velvet Underground, but transmitted in new, modern, breathless ways. One of the few modern albums that does unadorned justice to the Fender Jaguar electric guitar. Nice set of lyrics, though the 'indie' whisper in which they are delivered will no doubt irritate some..but those seeing screamy shouty unimaginative bands can always listen to The Darkness instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 16 Sept. 2000
This review is from: Painful (Audio CD)
This album is a delight from beginning to end. The gorgeous opener 'big day coming' seems to be about the early days of the band, before they got signed, and there is a noisier, shorter version of this track towards the end of the album. The standout tracks are 'a sudden organ' and 'i heard you looking'. The omnipresent feedback sounds beautiful, and works brilliantly with the fragile vocals.

The US import has some nicer artwork on the CD and CD cover than the release on City Slang. Get this one if you like cover art and if you don't mind the extra bucks.

Fantastic to have this on vinyl, a sonic medium definitely suited to this band in particular. All 90s Yo La Tengo is excellent. Whilst this doesn't quite match up to the two records which proceeded it, it still offers some agonizingly beautiful moments, take the opening and closing tracks which bookend this gorgeous slab of wax as examples.

Yo la Tengo make great albums and this is one of their best. It has all their trademark styles on one album - atmospheric ballads to feedback guitar workouts. Buy it now.
