I always think of Siegried as one of the most accessible parts of Wagner's ring cycle, based on the music, the story and the fact that it's also packed with beautiful orchestral passages and a fantastic duet at the end. Siegfried's music is truly youthful and heroic. In terms of the musical and melodic performance, this box set doesn't disappoint and coupled with the fact that most of the sung roles can be followed in English adds a certain advantage (as I have explained in reviews of the previous two parts of this Ring cycle on Chandos). The disappointment for me, as in Valkyrie box set, is Alberto Remedios. His diction is very "fluid" and it is difficult to follow what he is singing most of the time. Seeing that his is the main role in this part of the cycle, I find it frustrating that unless I pick up the booklet and try to follow him that way (defeats the object since I already have the excellent and musically superior Solti conducted cycle for doing that) the only way I know what is happening is by listening carefully to the other sung parts around him. If you know the cycle very well by the time you buy this, then it might not be a huge problem for you because Remedios' singing is indeed youthful and heroic.

As for the "character" parts of Mime, Alberich and Fafner ... the latter is effectively brought out with the sound effects, but as in my criticism of Rhinegold in this Goodall conducted cycle on Chandos, is that there is a lack of bite in what I would term are the Nibelung characters of Mime and Alberich. They both sing beautifully but compared to, say, the Solti conducted cycle (my personal favourite) they lack the edge and bite required when listening to this opera without being at a live performance.

The recording quality is good, but somewhat smoothed out and boxy in some of the louder passages, presumably because it was a live recording and they needed to make sure the sound quality remains consistent, so some of the loudest and quietest passages don't sound as clear as other recordings I have heard. Anything in the middle range is pretty good.

Overall a nice set to have along one of your preferred original language performances.

I have seen Siegfried with this same cast so many times at the The London Colliseum, that to rehear those wonderful voices captured in such a brilliant recording was truly like revisiting a special friend you have not seen for a long time.Sound is excellent for a live recording.
