5.0 out of 5 stars How the Eighties should be remembered...
Propaganda were overshadowed by Frankie Goes to Hollywood in the mid-eighties but the more musically astute of us had heard debut single Dr Mabuse and been stunned by its uniqueness.
Propaganda only lasted for one real album although they were early pioneers of the remix, illustrated by their second album and ably reflected by this new compilation Outside World...

2.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music, dreadful sound
Magnificent synth-pop from one of the most under-rated bands of the 1980s. This collection gathers some of the best 12" remixes and b-sides from Propaganda's hitherto unavailable back catalogue.

There is no new material on here but much is appearing on CD for the first time and having had the priviledge of an demo cd, it sounds stunning. Unexpectedly Mabuse appears in two radically different forms but it is the opposite ends of Jewel / Duel that stand out as being relevant in the year 2002. This is more than a retro trip though, Femme Fatale and Frozen Faces are gorgeous, Claudias voice can rarely have been in better form.
For once, believe the Propaganda, an essential purchase.

Magnificent synth-pop from one of the most under-rated bands of the 1980s. This collection gathers some of the best 12" remixes and b-sides from Propaganda's hitherto unavailable back catalogue.

However ... the sound quality on this CD is really quite dreadful - a lot of it sounds as if it's been badly mastered from vinyl. There's a lot of clipping on several of the tracks.

You'd be much better off buying the UK edition of Outside World, which has far superior sound. The only significant difference is that the p:Machinery cassette single (unique to this CD) is replaced by the superior Complete Machinery - a track that originally appeared as the b-side to a 12" single in 1985 and claimed to be highlights from the cassette single, but actually featured a unique mix! Confused? It was never easy being a Propaganda fan ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Propaganda, a band to savour and remember., 29 Jun. 2002
This review is from: Outside World (Audio CD)
A Propaganda fan since their emergence in this country back in 1984, I have been waiting for a release like this for some time. I have the recently obtained German version of this CD and await the English version (1 track different and no DVD !!)in mid July.
There is only one word to describe this band. Magnificent. Their songs are wonderfully constructed epic soundstages that totally involve the listener and demand repeated listening.
Anyone who has Propaganda material should buy this record for the alternative versions included. Anyone who has never heard them before should buy it as part of their musical education.
Get your order in now !! Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars rare mixes from ZTT's best, 6 Oct. 2005
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Outside World (Audio CD)
Propaganda's A Secret Wish was the jewel in the crown of ZTT's mid-80s releases. Rather overshadowed by the Frankie Goes To Hollywood furore, the debut Propaganda album has stood the test of time far better than FGTH's Welcome to the PleasureDome. Outside World collects together some remixes and curios from the period and is well worth buying. You get the full original 12" mixes of Duel and Jewel. Lied and The Lesson were, I think, extra tracks on the 2x7" double pack version of Duel when released as a single. Femme Fatale and Frozen Faces were essential B-sides to complement the original vinyl release of A Secret Wish (which at the time didnt include Frozen Faces). I'm not sure that the Mabuse mixes are exactly like either of the 12" vinyl releases I got at the time. And what happened to p-machinery Beta? This was first available on a ZTT compilation and featured some blistering guitar by the late John McGeogh (Magazine, Banshees, PiL). Apart from the very first seconds, the guitar appears to have been erased from this version: publishing problems to blame, perhaps? And a bit reminiscent of the original US release of A Secret Wish, which saw some screeching guitar ommitted from the opening track A Dream Within a Dream, only to be replaced by thundering drums. Anyway, if you're a Propaganda trainspotter, which I obviously am, you should be told!

The only place you'll get those unique 12" remixes of p-machinery, Dr. Mabuse, Duel/Jewel (but not Do Well, that's a 25th gift..), but it's the whole ATMOSPHERE of Propaganda that'll ensnare the soul, sell 'em your soul...post punk, a lifestyle in an album (and a half), this brings a tear to my eye when I listen now: perfection! Please buy this, then the 25th anniversary edition of Secret Wish, let's force a bloody reunion!!! Nah, but then the mystique will be gone for good....ok, that's the final word then...?
