This review is from: Catwalk Glamour (Audio CD)

The trouble with dance music is that to be called 'house' or 'trance' etc. the music must conform to a certain style, a certain beat; must contain certain recognisable elements that make it one genre of electronica and not another. Having laid out those criteria it is pretty hard to build originality into that very narrow framework and unfortunately this double CD suffers a little too much from lack of creativity and originality.

If you break it down on a track-by-track basis, then these CDs are really nothing special, nothing more than generic house muzak. HOWEVER, having said that, that is also the CD's strength. I use this kind of music to listen to on headphones when I draw and I don't want a lot of really very catchy, individualistic tracks that might disturb me, what I want is slightly bland, safe, generic beats that allow me to listen from beginning to end without really noticing at what point I am presently listening. And to that end this double CD works brilliantly. if you need music to clean to, or jog to, then this CD is certainly a good buy, because it's continuously mixed and not particularly original.

On the plus side of the divide, I should also mention the graphic and product design elements. Whilst the the women on all three covers are ironically certainly not 'models' (especially the rather short girl on vol.3) the graphic design is quite outstanding and quite original indeed, although repeating the exact same design for three volumes does get a tad boring. Regarding packaging there is a nice slip cover with double-faced printing to cover the case, which incidentally is a larger 'Super Jewel Box' something I have never seen before - maybe a Taiwanese case, these are afterall produced by a Taiwanese company. The only down-side to this original jewel case is that if you get a cracked case (as I did with a non-Amazon purchase of vol. 3) then you have to take it back because you can't just buy a regular jewel-case, something to be aware of. Finally, although these cases are pretty cool, design-wise, the way they stack two CDs directly on top of one another is just a bad, bad idea, I mean it is just asking to scratch you precious CDs, something again that should have been thought about more carefully.

To sum-up, if you want originality, don't buy ANY of these CDs (I own all three in the series and the review for all three is EXACTLY the same). If, however, you want safe, listener-friendly beats that won't offend you and which allow you to simultaneously perform another task, then this CD is for you. Not the best, but certainly not the worst compilation I have ever heard.
