This review is from: Mr Henry Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (Audio CD)
He may be now retired, but we still have the recordings of legendary countertenor James Bowman. This 1988 recording of selected Purcell songs and odes is a fine showcase for his vocal art. There are very similar discs of the Purcell repretoire available by other great countertenors, such as Andres Scholl's O Solitude and Gerard Lesne's Purcell - O Solitude both of which I enjoy, but Bowman's just about edges them out.

But in my opinion, any Englishman should have the whole of Purcell's output on his shelf. I recommend the sets The Complete Secular Solo Songs of Henry Purcell and Purcell: The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs which like this current disc features the King's Consort under director Robert King, plus Bowman alongside a stellar cast of vocalists.
