This was my first real experience of Jerry Lewis. He was obviously a very adroit physical comedian and I couldn't help admiring his timing and his dexterity. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything he did even remotely amusing, so this will probably be my last experience of him.

The movie itself is wretched beyond belief. In steering Gore Vidal's play away from its original satiric purpose, the film-makers have left it floundering in a meaningless void. Nothing makes any sense, nothing is developed, nothing connects with anything else, nobody has a consistent character, there is no story of any kind, there are no discernible ideas, very few jokes, no consistent viewpoint, no forward momentum and no climax. It starts, fills an interminable 80 minutes, and stops.

I didn't realise they made mainstream movies as bad as this.

The print on which this German DVD is based is generally OK, but it does deteriorate very noticeably at the reel changes. However, these lapses in quality last such a short time you barely notice them.

A very low budget movie with a very average story line but worth while having. Sci-fi meets comedy average set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jerry's a blast...off!, 21 May 2013

Critics have long been divided on Jerry Lewis, there doesn't seem to be a middle ground - he's either liked, or disliked. Personally, I agree with the French, Jerry Lewis at his best can be very funny indeed. "Visit to a Small Planet" is one of his funniest films, a little gem in fact.

Based on a story by Gore Vidal, it concerns Kreton, a student from a planet near Cloud 9, who is fascinated by our own planet, so much so that he makes an unauthorised visit, to the chagrin of his teacher, an excellent John Williams. Thinking it's still the 1860s, Kreton lands in Confederate uniform and calls at the home of Fred Clark, the perfect foil to Jerry's antics. Most of the action takes place around Fred and his family, with a highly amusing diversion taken to the "Hungry Brain" beatnik club, where Kreton understands the words to the song: Video, video, mop..MOP! They should have become as famous as Michael Rennie's Klaatu barada nikto!

Sometimes Jerry Lewis has been known to slightly over indulge himself, by overdoing the face pulling, silly gestures and noises - Lou Costello could also be guilty of this. Not in this film though, Jerry's timing is spot on. I smile just thinking about it.

This film has survived the age of time. It must have, because of the example of - when our 16 yr-old daughter and son were in stitches with laughter. They kept requesting me to rewind the funny bits. Good funny material.
