4.0 out of 5 stars A fine selection of Funk classics, 6 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Right from track one - I know you got soul by Bobby Byrd - one of his very best- pretty much every song delivers an almighty slab of the Funk. My only gripe with this is that most lovers of the genre will most probably own most if not all of the tracks on offer here.
However, If you are reasonably new to the Funky sound of J.B and his contemporaries (his presence - and influence - is felt throughout many of these choones)you couldn't ask for a better intro to his (and their) phat n groovy world. This is a marginally more complete offering than the first in the series, but I would advise that you purchase both.

The premise of this album and the other two volumes in the trio, is to present work by the backing band and musicians associated with the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. Now that may sound like a strange idea - removing the main talent from the picture, but it works magnificently. Mr Brown's fingerprints remain all over the music even if he is not taking a lead singing role. Instead there are a series of instrumental grooves by the JBs and funky vocal performances by the likes of Hank Ballard, Lyn Collins, Bobby Byrd and Marva Whitney. The period is early to mid 1970s - so we are in prime funk territory here. Clearly something of a dictator, JB nevertheless saw himself at the centre of a musical community and its great to hear some of its other citizens get the credit they deserve.

For me volume 2 is even more high octane than volume 1. Buy it!
