A great start that got better by the album
on 13 November 2010
Many consider this a classic and I suppose because it was the moment that brought us the Blackmore/Dio combo, it may well be. However, this album was massively eclipsed by their immense follow-up Rainbow Rising. There have been successive incarnations of Rainbow and they have developed a sound and maturity that many bands can only dream of emulating. Having said all that, this is still a damn fine album ...few bands push out stuff of this quality as their debut effort (although Blackmore's huge DP experience made him far from a rookie).
There are many good tracks on here and I love the fact that they close their first album and their final album with the same track. Still I'm Sad is a busy, catchy, thigh tapping instrumental but I urge you all to get hold of a copy of their final album Stranger In Us All and listen to the updated version with some superb lyrics laid over it by vocalist Doogie White ... that new version rates as one of my all time favourite Rainbow songs. This is a good album, well worth buying but its far from their best .... but if you are going to get into Rainbow its a must have album.
