4.0 out of 5 stars Great musical depth
Peggy Suicide is an album of incredible variety and scope, especially the rhythmic textures & the impressive array of guitars. The arrangements are innovative and the music melodious. The opener Pristeen is a tuneful ballad with extraordinary guitar sounds, followed by Double Vegetation, a brooding number with nervous rhythms. The tender Promised Land starts out as a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Cope deluxe edition - another balls up!
After the massive disappointment of the 2006 Jehovah Kill remastering (a sonic disaster)you might have thought that island might have ensured they got this one right? Right? WRONG! UNBELIEVABLY SO VERY WRONG!
On first listening to disc one at least, the remastering seems to have avoided the distortion problems of the Jehovah Kill remastering which made the latter...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pristeen Peggy Suicide, 12 Dec. 2009

This was Juilan Cope transcending his Popstar past as he had progressed from the Teardrop Explodes via the Early solo album and hits which showed that Julian ploughed his own furrow whilst constantly swimming against the mainstream, the influences are there in the music krautrock, Psychedelia, Iggy Sixties pop.
There is a slightly dark world view which pervades all his work but there is a message of hope too he had begun to become a classic outsider.
Having established the Cope brand he begins to deconstruct himself through this and susequent releases.
This is Guitar based Rock it has timeless quality to it that filtered down into the music scene in general not that He was ever cited as major influence on say the Stone Roses but hey.. just listen. But in other way it ties itself to dates ie by having in the title Western front 1992 C.E. (Common or Christian Era)
Pristeen is great opener, Double Vegatation sets the tone,Yes there are moments Such as Head 'I fell my head exploding now' with bubblegum type organ which leads into Leperskin with its wah wahs a go go then the Purer pop of Beautiful Love Which had back to the World shut your Mouth/Fried era. Safesurfer comments upon the post aids culture of the time. You Hints at Zappa etc.
The general tone of the album is up it was a precursor to a more radical path that he since taken indulging his proclivities and personal tastes doing it for himself like Say Peter Hammill or Robyn Hitchcock.
Hanging out and hung up on the line is a Balls out Rocker with its message of global warming a decade or so early...(The Jury is still out on that one...)and its antithesis Hung up and hanging out to dry ...
There is but one Juilan Cope he is an Enthusiast, a Cynic,A Scholar, a Shaman, Eco Warrior ,New Age Guru, A Modern Antiquarian.
As he says...Listen to me If you love me at all...
A one off, A true Maverick.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essential Cope album to possess, 12 Nov. 1999
This review is from: Peggy Suicide (Audio CD)
I first listened to this album around '95, and was immediately sucked into its deliciously deep and meaningful abyss of truly awe-inspiring tracks. At that point i didn't even know who Cope was. Now i'm a true convert to Drudism. If you reckon your any sort of authority on music, then this album will be there in your top 5. Just buy it and discover a new concept in music, this really kicks .........

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd forgotten how great Copey is/was, 9 Nov. 1999
This review is from: Peggy Suicide (Audio CD)
Reading Copey's new book has made me revisit some of the old LPs and this one in particular stands out. Fantastic songs, superb production, but most of all the great man's spirit is all pervading. Maybe I'm getting old, but this stuff just stands out to me as some of the best rock and roll of all time. Hey, all you pretty young Sterephonic/Manic heads, have a listen to the master at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cope's most accessible album though not his best., 30 Oct. 2003

Cruelly shorn of one of the best LP tracks "Uptight" (at 1h 20minutes, Peggy Suicide is a little too long to fit on a single CD), Peggy Suicide is still a thrillingly-good album that showcases not just Cope's eccentricity but his tremendous songwriting talent. Cope needs the restrictions of major labels to curb his wilder instincts. Buy it, and then befriend a dedicated Cope fan who will burn a copy of "uptight" for you.

This review is from: Peggy Suicide (Audio CD)
THIS IS THE GREATEST ALBUM OF THE 20TH CENTURY. IN MANY WAYS IT IS WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED AND RECOGNISED AS IT WON'T AND DOESN'T SHOW UP IN MAGAZINE POLLS AND SUCHLIKE. IF YOU BUY ONE ALBUM EVER, MAKE SURE IT'S THIS ONE.

Wide variety herein . Too wide .I listen to about half , and trim some of thoses tracks . Cope is unique in his musical vision - but needs a guiding hand . I wish Syd Barrett in his prime could have taken this music and shown Mr Cope what could be ...

I guess the music itself is reasonable, but I did not expect the clumsy, smutty lyrics about "going down" on people. etc. No warning about this on the packaging, and I'm afraid means I will not be listening to this again. Money wasted.
