4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect
Another great film from the days of DISCO but unfortunately the cover and leaflet are not in English, which is typical of old films purchased on the web. It seems the rest of the world is playing catch-up with the UK in watching great films!

This review is from: Thank God It's Friday (1978) [Region 2 import] Donna Summer (Audio CD)
After the success of the movie and soundtrack Saturday Night Fever along came the movie Thank God its Friday. On paper the movie had much going for it. Unlike Saturday Night Fever with its less than true original Disco acts such as the Bee Gees or KC and the Sunshine Band, Thank god its Friday had original Disco acts. The Bee Gees, who had no doubt turned Disco to their advantage didn't begin as a Disco act. The movie was also to star Donna Summer who had been described as Queen of the Disco, The commodores would also appear and although more of a soul group were famous enough to make the movie attractive. The movie was about a Disco and centred on an evening of a Dance contest. And finally there was a great Disco soundtrack.
However the movie was not great at all. The plot is more like a soap opera with cheesy dialogue. Unlike Saturday Night Fever there are no great Dance sequences and apart from the finale few minutes the movie doesn't take enough advantage of the music on the soundtrack. The music only serves as broken background music to the dialogue and thin plot. The film does have a light gentle feel to it and doesn't have anything obscene or in bad taste and in my opinion does have a much brighter feel to it than the story in Saturday Night Fever with its swearing, sex and suicide elements. There is a weak attempt at humour and the ending is good.
A couple go to the Disco known as the Zoo for their anniversary celebration. The husband gets into a mess and the wife gets attention from an admirer, Two guys keep trying to meet girls but are constantly thwated. One finally meets a nice girl but gets locked in a stairwell on his own. And likewise a girl tries to meet men but is prevented by another woman. Another guy who has used a dating agency is dissapointed to find he has been matched with a prim woman taller than he is. Two under age girls try to get into the Disco but are rejected repeatedly and then eventually they trick their way in. The commodores are due to appear live a the Disco and their roadie gets repeatedly stopped by the police who think he has stolen the instruments. A young woman want to sing a the Disco and keeps trying to get in and get the DJ to let her sing to her demo track. Eventually some of the characters hook up together and the commodores do appear. The film ends on a high with the singer getting to sing.
The film was produced by Casablanca filmworks with Mowtown Productions for Columbia Pictures, It features an early performance by Jeff Goldblum and the first major appearance by Debra Winger. It also stars Valerie Landsburg and Donna Summer.
The movie was a bit of a let down but the soundtrack was more than welcome The new Donna Summer tracks were the only real commercial success and even the song Last Dance was a massive flop for Donna in the UK. It failed to get into the UK top 40 and was rarely played in full in the Disco because of its slow intro that takes nearly two minutes to get into any kind of Dance mode. The song starts off much more like a ballad. DJs favoured fading into the extended version after the slow intro. The track reached number 3 in the US billboard hot 100 and number one on the US dance chart. It was writtend by Paul Jabara who also appears in the film and has tracks of his own on the soundtrack.
In some ways the movie was good as it showed a mixture of characters at the Disco for various reasons just like in real life. It also stands now as sign post of the era of Disco. But as a movie it lacks sparkle and often seems dull and tired until the end.

The picture is not to bad but the sound is not great on this DVD although it serves well enough.
