5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars is not enough.
My CD collection is littered with albums that I buy on the strength of 1 track and never listen to again. And so one sunny day I purchased Amy McDonald's 'This is the Life' after hearing track 1 'Mr Rock & Roll' on the radio. Of course being the first track I assumed that I would listen to it over and over again thinking what utter tosh the rest was.... WRONG...

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent start, but then....
I desperately wanted to love this album. I was all ready to give it five stars before I'd even listened to it. And then...

...and then I listened to it. The first few tracks are brilliant. Such a unique voice and style and obviously a gifted song writer. And then...they all started to sound the same. The problem is that she HAS such a unique voice, and...

3.0 out of 5 stars Promise almost drowned by production., 30 July 2007
This review is from: This Is the Life (Audio CD)
This review is not going to win too many friends, after all this is friendly summery music is it not? Well yes, and in places it is fine, the opener Mr Rock and Roll kicks off with a great celtic lilt but it sets a standard that is rarely approached by what follows. Their are moments, not just of good songwriting but also when you get a feeling for the singer's character and attitude. However the real disaster is the production, drowning everything in a sort of middle-aged folk-rock-by-numbers mess. When Macdonald raises her voice is is not so much about emotion as trying to drown the awful backing.

The closing ballad shows she has vocal talent too but it is again turned to mush by the accompaniment.

A teenager with some promise who needs to find her own voice if she is to make more memorable and interesting records.

To me this set of eleven songs seems like This Is The Life - a deserving worldwide hit, with six million YouTube views at the time of writing - and ten charming variations. Collectively, they just about pull their weight, and occasionally get close to genius (e.g. 'Poison Prince', in my humble opinion). I very much hope we will see one or two more big ideas in the second album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best album I've heard all year, 8 Jan. 2008

Not the most original music you'll ever hear and it's certainly not cutting edge. R&B, Hip Hop, it is not. However what you will find are 10 beautifully crafted pop songs, of which half easily are singles material.

I simply can't stop playing it on my CD player. Fab stuff.

Easily the best album I've heard for a long time. If she can cope with the pressure of instant fame and resist the temptation to rush out a follow up album she'll go far. All the more remarkable for the lack of hype surrounding her unlike Duffy, Adele or Kate Nash (ugh), she topped the charts with this album purely by word of mouth. It's now gone double platinum, too.

And deservedly so. If she doesn't receive an award at the next Brit's theres no justice in this world.
