I had heard before that this album is not as good as the previous four albums and it is just a silly metal album that appeals to people that only know the song 'enter sandman'. That song could also be called "Enter only Metallica song you know." This album does not compare to Kill 'em All, Ride the lightning, Master of Puppets, or ...And Justice For All. It is not terrible, I guess it had a lot to live up to, but listening to the albums after this one you can Metallica must be going down from this point which is sad but a lot of bands are, getting old I guess. Perhaps this album was to attract new fans in the evolved music era, it certainly let true thrash metal fans hanging around and stuck with the four amazing albums this album succeeded.

"Sell out", elitists cried when Metallica scored their first Top 5 single and album in August 1991 prior to their Donington show. This is not a sell out. It's the sound of Metallica taking their place as BIGGEST BAND ON THE PLANET (second only to Guns n Roses' "Use Your Illusion" albums that year). There are hardly any duff songs on here. There are two great ballads in "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters", some fierce rockers in, well, everything apart from the dull "Don't Tread On Me" and uninspired "Holier Than Thou".
Don't listen to the trendy elitists. Buy this album and be prepared to ROCK.
