This review is from: Nyman: MGV Piano Concerto (Audio CD)
Seldom do I ever get along to listening to the final few tracks on this CD that cover Nyman's Piano Concerto... not because of any dislike of that work but simply because the first 5 tracks on the CD comprise Nyman's MGV (Musique à Grand Vitesse - High-Speed Music), a 26 minute work so terrifically enjoyable that as soon as it's finished, I normally find myself heading straight back to the start to go through it all over again. It was commissioned for the launch of the TGV Paris-Lille train line and that's reflected in the way its 5 movements (`Regions') open up, supposedly like five interlinked train rides that together make up a continuous journey. The music is surging and propulsive but seems constantly to be shifting mood, as if depicting the changing scenery rushing by. There's not really a distinct melody exactly, but there are recurrent rhythms and lots of repeated phrasing and each Region seems to contain various fragments of the big, fantastic chorale-like melody that arrives fully in the 5th (final) Region, where the opening theme returns, only this time in a frenetic blaze of sidedrums and the whole thing makes total, beautiful sense. My favourite Nyman composition (in spades); the 5th Movement in particular is among the most immersive, stirring 5 minutes of musical composition in my record collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first group of movements are simply magical., 9 Nov 2010
This review is from: Nyman: MGV Piano Concerto (Audio CD)
Simply amazing!
Technical, brilliant, exciting, emotional, colourful, relentless, mosaic, new, mathematical, patterns, buzzing.

Makes me tearfully energised every time.

I also watched the Ballet to this piece.

I've only recently started listening to Nyman, so I bought this CD on a bit of a whim.... but I'm so glad that I did... it's terrific! Nyman is such a clever composer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and different, 10 Jan 2011
This review is from: Nyman: MGV Piano Concerto (Audio CD)
The mgv was written for the inauguration of the french tgv train and the piece speedily goes through many different landscapes until coming to a rest at its final destination. It is certainly a powerful piece of music that still isn't too modern in its sound.
