4.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic and loud....
I saw this wonderful act in Dublin 1986 supporting the Housemartins. They were as good as any live act I have ever seen since. They believed so much in their own unique sound and they certainly surprised 4,000 Housemartin fanatics. On this album are the main highlights from that very memorable cold October night. 3.0 out of 5 stars good harmonies and lyrics but many tracks sound similar to one another
The harmonies and lyrics of these songs are great. But too many of them sound alike. These guys are good. But this cd is a case of twins producing quads or quintuplets! It would be nice to hear them singing with someone else.

'Misty Blue" is a beautiful, slow love song. "Letter from America" (folk and band version) needs no introduction at this stage...possibly the most poignant tribute to emigration you'll ever hear. "The first attack" is fantastic; the acoustic chords coupled with affecting harmonies.... You'll find yourself singing along, so infectious is it.
My favourite track is "Sky takes the Soul"....if ever a song made you want to take up playing the guitar this is it...a fast song with raw but wonderful lyrics ("it could be tomorrow it could be today when the sky takes the soul, the earth takes the clay") and, yes, those harmonies again..
"The joyful Kilmarnock Blues" even introduces a simple but very effective way of grabbing your attention ...a fast clapping sound...
The band scores well for this album - 4 stars for their honesty, their harmonies, their feel-good music and their inventiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will be suprised how great this album is...., 14 Jan 2004
This review is from: This Is the Story (Audio CD)
.... since the late 80's, i always had The Proclaimers down as "the scottish blokes with glasses who sung 'letter from America" and basically that was it. A few years ago i seen this album in a sale and decided to get it for a joke. I was blown away completely. I had bought it to sing along to 'letter to america' for a laugh, but when i played it, realised i had missed out on,no joking, probably one of the top 20 albums easily of all time. Leave whatever predudices you have about these two at the door, they are a classic band and this album isn't a one off - the next 4 albums after this are just as good....

5.0 out of 5 stars Flatten all the vowels and throw the R away!, 13 Feb 2007
This review is from: This Is The Story (Audio CD)
What can be said about the Reid brothers that hasn't already been said?

Just have a listen to this album and you will find a number of things to be true, firstly - these guys REALLY MEAN IT! next up, there is no 80's style over production to get in the way of these songs. Finally no other band can have you smiling and laughing at one moment to be crying the next, only to repeat the whole exercise over and over throughout the whole album!

Just buy it!

The first album from the proclaimers and their finest in my opinion. It set the standard of things to come and they have gone from strenth to strenth.

Passion, harmonies, proud Scottish accents with a pared back guitar production and heartfelt, poetic lyrics. Nothing else quite like this 1st album of theirs.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the greatest folk albums of all time.., 24 July 2001
This review is from: This Is The Story (Audio CD)
Great lyrics, great guitar strumming. Mix of moderately jumpy tunes with some classical folk art...great to drink a pint to and relax on a hot summer night with you best girl at your side and your pup at your feet...drinking old Alex Keith's pub draught...

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant collection of songs to pick you up, 2 Nov 2010

I can't testify to the quality of other albums by The Proclaimers, but I can declare that this one is a brilliant collection of songs that I have a very personal attachment to. I picked this up on cassette around about the time of the divorce from my first wife. The songs and music contained on that cassette played a major role in getting me through that very tough time.

I guess the albums genius is simply down to the talent of The Proclaimers, as the album doesn't depend on virtuoso musicianship or surgical studio production. Instead all you get is solid song writing delivered with a gritty sort of integrity. The atmosphere blows hot and cold throughout with moments of wry humor supported with abrupt honesty about the cold facts of life.

So when at the time when I was feeling down and deflated "This Is The Story" armored me with a strong sense of defiance to my situation that meant that I could pick my-self up and move on. For that reason I highly recommend this album to anyone that needs a burst of life to help with living.
