4.0 out of 5 stars the better high & dry EP, 27 Oct 2010
This review is from: High & Dry (MP3 Download)
this is a pretty nice double A-sided single (or, as it says on the cover, 'aa single'). it starts with High and Dry, which is a gorgeous pop song, possibly the most accessible thing radiohead have done WHICH IS NO REASON TO DISMISS IT FOR NOT BEING ORIGINAL! (or groundbreaking or whatever.) its accessibility makes it a good opener in my opinion. album opener Planet Telex follows. the vocal is powerful - i don't know whether that's despite or because of thom apparently being completely stoned when he sung it.
on to what is probably your main reason for buying this EP: the b-sides. Maquiladora is one of Radiohead's many great non-album songs. it's an agressive rocker with a beautiful chorus. the 'hexidecimal mix' of Planet Telex is probably the best remix of a Radiohead song out there. unlike many remixes it's quite slow and spaced out, and keeps all the qualities of the original. i like the long instrumental part at the beginning, the beat and how the piano (or keyboard or whatever) is easily heard during the chorus.
as for how it compares with the other High & Dry/Planet Telex EP, well a lot of people seem to like Killer Cars from CD 2 and it is ok but i don't think it's as good as Maquiladora, and the L.F.O. JD mix of planet telex, frankly, is crap. the only 'music' is a pounding metallic beat and the only vocal is the 'you can crush it' line sampled repeatedly.
so if you're buying a CD of the single, make it CD 1 with the red cover. if you're downloading, download maquiladora, Planet Telex (hexidecimal mix) and Killer Cars. (that's assuming you have The Bends - the first two tracks are on there.)

An excellent double a-sided single combining two of my favourite songs off the album 'The Bends'. The light melodic High and Dry and the heavier, almost Enoesque Planet Telex compliment each other brilliantly.
