Extraordinary value for money,

This review is from: Sony DVPSR90B MIDI DVD Player (Electronics)
Since I began to download DivX rips of US TV episodes I wanted a capable player, so I bagged one of these off eBay and I am VERY impressed.I was struck by the sheer size of the thing - it's no bigger or heavier a slimline PS2. It's very elegant in black, with a green LED display and the minimum of buttons on the top edge of the fascia. The remote is also pleasingly small but doesn't compromise on features. (I should add for Scott Jones that although there is no eject button on this player's remote, the player does accept an eject "signal" from other Sony DVD remotes, as well as my Sony all-in-one). There is only the bare minimum of socketry (an RGB SCART and composite phonos), but I have no qualms with that. An S-Video would have been nice but it's unlikely an AV receiver owner would go for an entry level player like this anyway. Picture is outstanding at this price point, with a few preset modes and sharpness adjustment. The player is also pretty quiet in operation (but it's a bit slower to load than some of its stockier cousins - again, no biggie for me). Chapter seeks are incredibly quick and smooth, with barely a quarter of a second's pause; layer changes are equally fast, a huge improvement over my previous player. The biggest draw for me, though, was DivX capability - my home-burned compilations played as though they were ordinary MPEG-2's, so I can't fault it in this respect either. I just have to add chaptering structure to my comps now! I have also just discovered that it also plays Xvid (apparently far more popular), so there's every chance it could play ANYTHING in a .avi container. The rise of Blu-ray is apparently doubly good because players like this are now going for ridiculous (in a good way!) money. DVD players seem to have reached their apex now, so get on the wagon if you haven't converted to HD yet - this is probably the best £17 I've ever spent.

I bought this DVD Player for my daughter to use with her Sony 20" LCD television. I am suitably impressed by it's small size which makes it a lot less imposing than standard sized machines, especially in a busy teenager's bedroom! Functionality is as easy as it gets - there are four buttons on the casing of the DVD player, namely 'open tray', 'start', 'stop' and the 'power' button. The remote control is pretty self-explanatory to use also, however, it is with the remote that I have the most minor of niggles. The remote has no button to open and close the disk tray. If it had, there would never be any need to touch the player at all. Picture quality is first class on the 20" monitor referred to above. Sound quality is also very decent when played through headphones. All in all a quality product that provides excellent value for money, as well as reliability.

In a world of increasing complexity this player is a great exception - set up takes two minutes - picture and sound are excellent and it palys a wider variety of disc types than I own - and all for £35.

Just What I Hoped For!,

I'm no expert on DVD players - I just wanted something basic that someone with few technical skills could use, so I am delighted with this product. It's small and neat and so simple to use, giving excellent picture and sound quality. My son, who's a bit of a whizz-kid know-all regarding DVDs/TVs/Computers etc., was slightly dubious when I ordered it, but even he agrees it's an excellent product. Great value for money and exactly what I hoped for!

Does what it says on the tin - very well.No fancy frills, just a superb performance with easy operation. Even Granny can work it and she has only just found out what a DVD is!

Sony DVD,

Compact. Good looking.Very easy set up. Very happy with product. One or two things I would have liked that aren't there. If you stop the DVD you don't automatically go back to where you were when you come back and have to search. Plus there is no remote button to eject the disk [if there is, I haven't found it] but for the price, it's great value for money.

Paid £15 for my 3 year old multi regional dvd player which played everything but had to get a new one down to remote busted. This sony was peddled as a multi regional yet it will not play all my region 1 dvds but is selective and will play a few region 1,my old dvd was purchased for its ability to play all regions. Not happy and will need to send this player back and find a dvd player which is a multi regional player. The player i am giving two stars for looks and a better quality remote control but its not what i was hoping for.

Beware!!!,

This review is from: Sony DVPSR90B MIDI DVD Player (Electronics)
Although this product said that it resumed from last play point it dosen't if you switch the player off. I am usually careful and reasearch well before I buy products. On the sony website it said it resumed (with exactly the same information as my other sony player). It didn't do multi-disk resume but I didn't want this, just single (akin to the old VHS). It only resumes if you leave the set on and can play from last stop.It automatically switches off after a certain amount of time so then you have to scan backwards to your last stop. I know this isn't a big thing and maybe I am being petty but that is the only thing I ask of dvd player and sony both on this site and other research I did said it would resume. My other entry level sony dvd player did do this so it is not a question of the price. I am not sending it back as apart from that it is a good player. Just beware of the above point if you are going to buy it for that reason. Hope this helps Adele Steele |
