I was lucky to be tipped off by a friend that Christianne Stotijn was something very special. She has already produced a wholly memorable Mahler CD with Julius Drake, and I was privileged to attend an exquisite recital at the Wigmore Hall some 18 months ago. Now she and Drake come up with a very gracious selection of Tchaikowsky songs. There is nothing too remarkable about the music, but it becomes something quite lovely in the voice of this charming young Dutchwoman. The Lullaby from op 16 is particularly memorable, but it feels invidious to pick just one - there are many gems here.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A DREAM PARTNERSHIP IN TCHAIKOVSKY, 1 Sept. 2010

This review is from: Tchaikovsky - Romances (Audio CD)
A superb recital from the outstanding young Dutch mezzo. I was lucky enough to hear her in Strauss and Schonberg songs at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival, and my comments on this disc would apply equally to that recital. Beautiful though her voice is, there's nothing showy or self-indulgent about her singing, no "this is how softly I can sing... this is my gorgeous pianissimo" and so on, just dedication to the composer's intentions.

It can be hard to strike the right balance in Tchaikovsky songs; too much weight, too much emotion and these delicate melodies collapse. Stotijn gets it right every time, from the more broadly-drawn songs to the intimacy of the exquisite "Mild Stars Looked Down". She is entirely focussed on the music and is careful to avoid the temptation to over-sentimentalise - a notable contribution to the success of her Strauss songs in Edinburgh. That's not to say that she isn't a risk-taker, so the partnership with her accompanist is all-important, and Julius Drake is with her at every turn.

The disc is everything a great song recital should be. The recording captures Stotijn's voice perfectly and is beautifully balanced. I can't recommend it too highly.
