4.0 out of 5 stars an impressive dream ...
How lucky it is that the LSO decided to record and release so many of their concerts with Colin Davis ... so many of them seem touched by greatness. I loved his Elgar symphonies and found them all deeply moving and sufficiently fresh and re-thought to make it worthwhile buying despite already having two or more favourite versions of each. ...because the track markers are in the wrong place so downloads start and finish in the middle of pieces. I daresay the album as a whole is fine, but I've wasted my money trying to download a single piece to play in church ad the download is unusable.

It is the same here with the Davis Dream of Gerontius. This is truly a performance touched by greatness with excellent choral and solo singing and of course the wonderful LSO.

I don't want to get into comparisons with other versions of this marvelous work: it is a very competitive field. My first choices are Boult's (with Nicolai Gedda) and the very different (but very special) account by Britten (with Peter Pears) - Boult's calmer and more devotional, Britten's exciting and passionate. And then there's the wonderful Barbirolli version (with Janet Baker). And now, certainly, this new one from Davis is another I will return to. I have not yet heard the recent and much praised Mark Elder recording.
