5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Bach., 28 Feb 2011

This review is from: Swing, Sing & Think [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
Brilliant and superb pianism, if a little quirky. You can see what the orchestra are thinking during the rehearsal. Just watch their faces! This is sublime music, but stick-in-the-mud conservatives may not like his interpretations, I think Bach would have loved it. The audio sound is chrystal clear & a pleasure to listen to. I can't wait for Frays' next DVD.Michael Armstrong.

Judged by the cover, you'd think this is just another competent musician picked up by the label for marketing opportunities due to what you'd have to admit are his obvious good looks whether you're gay, straight, man, woman or martian or anything in between. Well I'm pleased to report that Mr Frey is a wonderful pianist - he brings Bach to life in such a joyous and rhythmical way. This (what my wife refers to as 'gorgeous') fellow - (she may be right!) is one of the best Bach pianists since Gould. And from what I've heard of his Mozart and seen of his input when giving conductors his opinions I think he might even end up a talented conductor one day. Now get this marketed to the girls that buy the boy band stuff so they might expand their musical world! Great stuff! (Although I do note this was released in 2009 - probably filmed in 2008 or even 07, so he might be looking a lot more like me nowadays.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Absorbing rehearsals by a perfectionist!, 2 Dec 2012

The worst thing about the DVD is the cover - David Fray is made to look like a naff fashion model: ridiculous! It's true that even in the DVD he comes across as a bit fond of himself, wearing a scarf and flicking his hair about, and the film slyly shows the orchestra getting slightly weary of his perfectionism over small details that probably wouldn't have concerned Bach! On the other hand, it is very entertaining to watch the rehearsals and he does play with great taste and beauty, so recommended. I found it slightly difficult to understand the menu at first, if you wanted to go straight to the performances and miss out the rehearsal (as you might after the second viewing, say) - but this is not too tough.
