This review is from: The Delfonics/Tell Me This Is A Dream (Audio CD)
This c.d. contains two of the original albums of the first great Philly Soul group, The Delfonics. As is customary for a Kent release, it has been superbly mastered and the sound quality is excellent.

The earlier album here, 'The Delfonics' was their fourth, and most tracks were written and produced by legendary Philly soul man Thom Bell. It is a fantastic set, containing the best Delfonics recording ever (IMHO), 'Didn't I (blow your mind this time)' and several other excellent tracks.

However the record company didn't think Thom was critical to them, and the group members thought they could write just as well as him, so for their fifth album his services were not deployed. The result was the second half of this c.d. 'Tell me this is a dream'. It's really more of a nightmare - not particularly soulful and with no real stand-out tracks ('Walk right up to the sun' is just about o.k.).

I believe Pete Waterman or someone similar once said that you can tell that the career of the band you are responsible for is over when they tell you they want to take 'artistic control' of their output. If you sit and listen to this c.d. from start to finish you will agree that he probably has a point!
