For those of you not aware of american singer songwriter Tom Rush - he is the one who wrote the Walker brothers hit No Regrets - included on this best of.

Rush started out as a pure folkie, and the first half of this CD covers his early 60's material - all acoustic. These story songs are just perfect, and those who want to pigeonhole him - put him alongside Harry Chapin, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and Tom Paxton. His reading of Joshua Gone Barbados is worth the entry fee alone.

Then Rush moved into his commercial period at the late 60's, which moved him into the Jackson Browne and Neil Diamond space. No bad thing, because his songs were not as commercial, but one or two stellar songs pushed him into the public's attention. He began to cover (the then unknown) Joni Mitchell's songs, and his cover of Urge For Going (also on this cd) may be in my top 10 favourite songs of all time. The mood, the ache, the loneliness in this song is all there. Prepare to be transported.

This great compilation doesn't get the full 5 stars for its main omission, which I find very weird. Mitchell's "The Circle Game" was the title track for his best album - and isn't included on this. Best get that album too, then.

Great value (17 songs), great readings of his and cover songs - but that very odd error of not including one of his very best. Buy it anyway!

Must admit I only bought this CD for Tom's original version of "No Regrets". However I was pleasantly surprised that I recognised several other tracks that I'd long forgotton. Well worth buying and if you can get it at a bargain price as I did, all the better.
