5.0 out of 5 stars Something special
This is really something special. Or rather two rather special things and some interesting extras. Acis and Galatea is given a wonderful performance, sprightly and passionate and beautifully sung. And Theodora - surely one of Handel's most beautiful scores - is also stunningly done. And the price makes all this something of a bargain as well.

This review is from: Handel: Acis And Galatea, Theodora, Cantatas (Audio CD)
This is really something special. Or rather two rather special things and some interesting extras. Acis and Galatea is given a wonderful performance, sprightly and passionate and beautifully sung. And Theodora - surely one of Handel's most beautiful scores - is also stunningly done. And the price makes all this something of a bargain as well.

Beauty is to the fore - in the choice of voices and in the playing of Les Arts Florissants. Christie favours brisk speeds but the effect is of lightness and grace rather than things sounding driven. Sophie Daneman is a star of both sets. She has a lovely voice, attractively girlish and appealing and with a richly varied tonal palette. At times (and especially in Theodora) she uses a "breathy" quality in the sound which might not be to all tastes. It helps her to sound vulnerable and for me it works but even those who feel less comfortable with it will surely warm to the many other ravishing sounds that she makes! Other singers also can be held up for the beautiful qualities of their voices. Richard Croft (in Theodora) is one strong example.

The last disk is given over to some early Handel Italian cantatas - dramatic in an extremely Italian was and not really obviously by Handel - and these appear well performed by Il Giardino Armonico with Giovanni Antonini. They represent a tour de force for soprano Eva Mei.

I feel confident that this Acis must be one of the top recommendations of the work. It is lighter and a little less dramatic than the wonderful Robert King version but it is very stylish and almost as well sung. I haven't heard the McCreesh version of Theodora and feel sure it is wonderful (I'm quite a McCreesh fan!) ... but I would be surprised if this version by Chritie does not stand beside it as an equal (if it doesn't surpass it, that is). Price is in the favour of this set - you get so much more for the price of McCreesh's Theodora. But, on the other hand, this set does not provide you with the libretti.

You can also buy Christie's Acis and Theodora separately in deluxe editions and, as I have said, I feel confident that these are top recommendations.
