As a relatively new (but hardcore) Kings of Leon fan I was excited and nervous about buying Only By the Night because of what I'd heard about it. People claiming they'd ditched their old sound and "sold out". While it's true that the hyperactive, schizophrenic sound that was Youth and Young Manhood is gone, they have not lost their spark.
Closer is a song that you don't forget. The first thing that strikes you is the thumping drums (courtesy of Nathan Followill) and the crashing cymbal that simulates a wild, choppy waves(complemented by Caleb Followill's lyric "I see a storm bubbling up from the sea").
The song definitely has an eerie feel (again, recognised by Caleb's opening line, "stranded in the spooky town") which is made even more authentic and sorrowful by Matt Followill's wailing guitars.
This is easily one of the best songs on the album (which by the way, isnt all that bad).

Together with an unusual and sensuous rhythm with an excellent base, this haunts and shakes inside. In my opinion, Kings of Leon's best yet.
