5.0 out of 5 stars Ballet Cinderella Kirov 1985
Of all my DVDs this is one I keep going back to. This owes much to Prokofief's superb musical score, but in terms of ballet it is a most enjoyable production, intimate rather than lavish, with the lovely and appealing Gabriella Komleva in the title role as Zolushka, or Cinderella, and the fine dancer Murad Daoukaev as her young prince. 1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing time warp
Any qualities in the performance were overshadowed by the dreadful quality of the picture resolution. Think of a video recording which you may have made from your own TV back in 1985 and, believe me, it would probably be better than this. The "special effects" are crudely done and the production is not the stage version but a staged version for the film. I bought this as...

L.Galinskaya and M. Koul contribute fine dancing and humour as the sisters, who are presented as pretty and sexy, but rather jealous and spiteful, teenagers.

This performance, dating to 1985, is based on the first production of the ballet, in 1944 in the West Siberian city of Molotov (now once again called Perm) where the Kirov company had relocated under wartime conditions. The great Galina Ulanova then danced the title role.

A ballet in three acts based on the well-known tale that has remained a pantomime favourite through the years. An early European version of the story was published in 1697 by the French author Charles Perrault and the German Brothers Grimm, but the put-upon maid-of-all-work who is forced to work as a servant for her family is found in classical antiquity.

Here, to a beautiful score by Sergei Prokofiev composed during World War II from 1940 to 1944, Cinderella is danced by Gabriella Komleva. At the premiere, Galina Ulanova was in the title role. The libretto was written by Nikolai Volkov and the choreography was created by Rotislav Zakharov. The costumes are lovely, and the `ugly sisters' are very far from ugly! Buttons, the wicked step-mother, and all the other familiar characters are here in a recording engineered most effectively from the Bolshoi stage version.

3.0 out of 5 stars DVD quality could be better., 21 Mar 2011

The qualitate of the DVD could be better. It's a remastered copy of an old videoformat. The performances are ok.

5.0 out of 5 stars pleasure, 31 Oct 2010

A big success chez nous who are not at all knowledgable on the finer points, just watch for pleasure. My husband liked the ugly sisters as 'saucy' sisters probably a bit better than the good Cinderella. We are looking forward to seeing it again. Perhaps one would have liked a separation of scenes, we arrived a bit quickly at the palace for the ball, didnt miss lack of audience or applause, it was an unexpected pleasure and the music of Prokofiev is always superb.

A little let down by the presentation of this story. But it was our first experience of Russian ballet.

I can't judge the quality of the ballet (I can only report that my wife, who is the ballet fan, didn't seem greatly moved), but the production leaves a lot to be desired, especially when judged by modren standards. It's an old, Soviet era film, and it looks (and sounds) like it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not filmed on stage, 9 Feb 2010
This review is from: Prokofiev - Cinderella [DVD] (DVD)
I feel bad giving it only two stars, but let me explain why. The dancers, costumes, and the music were all lovely, but this was not filmed in a theatre, or a stage and even used some special effects. I felt that this robbed the Ballet from some of its authenticity and the joy of watching a stage production.
It is just a matter of taste really, since I prefer ballet dvds that are live productions...
