5.0 out of 5 stars Biber - wonderful, 6 Feb 2013

This is a cd I've had for a few years and listen to often - I'm sure the neighbours have heard it more times than they care to remember. However, like all Biber's music, it has a quality that just bears repeating. Lyrical, powerful, beautiful - there's something about Biber and his musical creativity that just captures your ears, and then your soul.

The music on this cd is presented beautifully by the wonderful La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations under Jordi Savall. The Battalia is rousing and majestic, the sound of the battle, its prelude and aftermath are redolent throughout. The recording of the Requiem is, according to the cd cover, a world premiere of the piece at Salzburg Cathedral. It is likely that the Requiem was in fact written for the funeral of the Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph, Biber's patron, wh odied in 1687, and the Requiem would have been played during the funeral at the Salzburg Cathedral, so it is fitting that this recording also took place there. The sound is wonderful, the music totally bewitching, just breathtaking in its scope, its realisation and its beauty. Honestly, if you like Biber's music you will love this; if you don't know Biber's music, this is a fantastic place to start - you won't regret it. Biber's music is eternal and timeless, and this is a great cd offering.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered this disc for two reasons; my wife was to sing the Requiem and I had just read an article stating that the Battalia was one of the most extraordinary pieces of music you were ever likely to hear.

In fact, circumstances dictated that I "double-ordered" the Requiem, albeit a different recording (I will post a review of this particular disc in due course) and so the primary focus of this review will be on the Battalia.

It is an extraordinary piece to be sure and you will, I guarantee, be in turn surprised, amazed and delighted by its twists and turns.

Heinrich Biber was born in Bohemia in 1644 and spent much of his life at the court of Salzburg. The Battalia, first performed in 1673, was probably written for carnival celebrations at the Salzburg court, but it has been suggested that it also reflects the composer's feelings towards the Thirty Year War. A rousing, majestic piece noted for its polytonality and polyrhythm, it features popular songs and drunken revelry and a range of striking effects. This remarkable music, with its different metrical structures and tonalities, verges at times on dissonance, to achieve which Biber employs a variety of non-traditional methods, including striking the bow on the instrument and paper woven through the strings. As I say, it is absolutely amazing and demands to be better known; moreover, I cannot imagine a better recording than the one here made in 2002. Jordi Savall is very much an expert in this repertoire and the performance by Le Concert des Nations is exciting indeed.

This version of the Requiem was recorded in 1999 in its original setting, Salzburg Cathedral. It was composed in 1687 for the funeral of Biber's patron, Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph. It is a jubilant work, with a real sense of calm assurance and victory and is here given an authoritative performance by La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Le Concert des Nations and a choice team of vocal soloists.

If you don't know Biber, then you should...buy this disc!
