Thank heavens, I seriously thought I'd heard the last of this truly awe-inspiring band. After two first class releases (the 'Breeding Death' EP and the full length 'Resurrection Through Carnage') I thought that might be it. After all this is just a 'side-project' for the members concerned. Well thankfully they have decided to grace us with a third offering.
So what do you get, well one of the best Death Metal records since, well since 'Resurrection Through Carnage' really. I was a little worried when I saw that Mike Åkerfeldt had been replaced with the unknown (to Me anyway) Peter Tägtgren (a perfectly amicable split, as Mike wanted to concentrate on his 'day-job' band Opeth). Well I needn't have been apprehensive. Peter does a great job and proves to be at least the equal of Mike. He perhaps doesn't have the deepness of Åkerfeldt but makes up for this with a more varied range and the sheer intensity of his performance.
Another change for the better is that the band has recruited a 'proper' drummer this time round. Dan Swanö (who has switched to guitar this time) did a perfectly adequate job on the first 2 releases but this time the material on offer required a more adroit execution. Martin "Axe" Axenrot fills this slot nicely. He's a much better Death Metal drummer with cool fills and even the odd blast beat here and there.
This time round the band has developed it's sound and presented us with a much more mature (but still very heavy and brutal) set of songs, which is a logical step forward from the relatively simple material found on the first two albums. The songs are more involved and complex with better use of pace and dynamics yet still remain full of catchy hooks and cool melodies not too mention one great riff after another. The band even dabbles with acoustic and clean passages in some of the songs, don't worry though, there is nothing approaching a ballad here.
The production has also moved forward, the ultra distorted guitar sound has been cleaned up yet still remains heavy. This is a move that the material itself has dictated, with more complex arrangements and a true dual guitar attack, keeping the old sound would have turned the album into a mess. The whole sound of the album seems much more professional this time round, with every aspect of the band coming across loud and clear and yet, still retains the intensity and rawness that this type of music requires.
We have 12 songs this time round (with each of the three original members penning four tracks each) and each one has it's own distinct appeal. Stand out tracks (although each one is superb) are the brutal opener 'Cancer of the Soul', the really catchy 'Brave New Hell' and my personal faves 'Outnumbering the Day', with it's excellent chorus and the truly filthy 'Draped in Disease' (which has a really cool solo that reminds me hugely of 'Gothic' era 'Paradise Lost').
So there we have it. Bloodbath again proves that it's one of the freshest acts to appear on the (Death) Metal scene for years. And the band again gives us an album that pushes at the boundaries of Death Metal. My only complaint, or worry, is that we might never have another release. Let's hope that this group of exceptional musicians feels the need too keep this project ongoing.
This really is a truly outstanding album!
