5.0 out of 5 stars CS4 - Enhanced ease of use and capability, 27 Aug 2009

CS4 improves significantly over CS3 w.r.t. ease of using adjustment layers, and for enhancements to Photoshop RAW. The CS4 upgrade package includes a video, "Learning CS4," which explains and illustrates, not only the new features, but techniques for extracting pictures with good dynamic range and vibrance. There seems to be little that is particularly new about the adjustment layers capability, but they are now each accessible with such ease that the process of combining layer effects is both quicker and more effective. CS4 is able to address a greater range of RAW formats than CS3, and has an enhanced, auto-masking "Adjustment Brush" feature which enables really neat adjustments to localized areas within a picture. Overall, CS4 is worth the upgrade cost, and in some cases is necessary to address the latest versions of RAW, e.g. from Canon 5D MkII.

5.0 out of 5 stars photoshop gets better & stronger, 12 Oct 2009

This is an essential update for all those people involved in graphics / image manipulation.
I love the new 'panels' adjustment system, the improved dodge & burn tools, but especially the new content aware scaling - now fully incorporated into CS4. It is absolutely awesome : I would have upgraded from CS2 for this alone. But, as the others have posted here, there are so many other fantastic changes & additions to the programme that it would be churlish to bulk at the price - which to my mind is just about right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Photoshop product to date.., 9 May 2009

Over the past 6 years as a Beta Tester for Adobe I have seen their products steadily improve. CS4 is no exception. The vastly improved Bridge together with a 'non-destructive' Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) modules make this application a snip to run letting me spend less time in front of the Mac and more time behind my lens. Closer integration with Adobe Lightroom makes the 'round trip' from one to the other effortless AND updates are real-time. My only real gripe is pricing. Adobe does not offer a level playing field on price offering Dollars for Pounds across the Atlantic. That said, Amazon's pricing is pretty keen and postage is FREE if you want it - unlike Adobe.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need a previous cs for it to work, 22 April 2010

I just bought this. Perhaps stupidly as I haven't bought any cs products before. Looking for the cheapest price for cs4 I bought this and there was no mention that you needed a previous cs for it to work. Apart from the fact it said upgrade on the title I thought this just meant it was a new version from cs3.

Unfortunately I didn't find this out until I opened the box and tried to load it, so now I can't return it and buy the full version so I just wasted almost £200 on a useless product I can't use. Most people probably look closer into these things but thought I should mention it incase anyone else is a bit slow on this front like myself.

I rated it five as it is probably a brilliant product I won't know unless I spend heaps more.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Industry Standard, 24 Mar 2010

Many of the tools you will not know how to use from the offset but a little delving into them will open up ways to do editing much faster and more professional, the most commonly used tools for portraits are the dodge, burn and sponge tools to lighten darken and under / over saturate vital areas. Healing brush tool and the patch tool are brilliant at removing skin imperfections and spots as well as other larger areas. These are the very basics and if you really want to know what this extremely sophisticated package is all about then tutorial videos from magazine CD's or subscribing to Lynda.com will help no end. Before long you will have certain parts of your workflow sown up with various droplets on your desktop to drag images or whole folders on top of that will automate via pre-recorded actions (actions are a set of recordings that monitor what you do - these can then be played back on new images to speed up repetitive tasks! Just like Microsoft office macro's if you've used them!). If you have written script before then feel free to write your own for doing tasks in Photoshop too, applescript, VBScript and Javascript are all supported.

I originally learnt how to use Jasc Paint Shop Pro and found switching to Photoshop 6 quite a challenge. Once I had devoted a little time it soon became very easy to use and did what you wanted it to do without fail. All other packages that are aiming for the same success will merely pale in comparison...

One thing to note is that CS4 is still only a 32-bit application so don't go spending a fortune upgrading your machine to have more than 4gb of RAM unless other applications need it - you could assign large peices of RAM as scratch disks but this is only useful if you're going to start creating art that is in the region of a 1gb file upwards (this may sound big but a well spec'd machine can save a file of this size in less than a minute!).

So the name doesn't tell the whole picture as you can do more with Photoshop than just edit and tweak photo's you can also create artwork from scratch. The brand name is almost common knowledge these days, you'll be out and about at a Wedding and people will ask you to "photoshop" them! This goes to show that now only like the vacuum was branded a hoover and MP3 players genrally refered to as iPod's that this has to be by far the most renowned and best software for any kind of image manipulation and modification.

The nicest feature that CS4 has over the previous versions is the replacement of the "Feather" command, this has been replaced with "Refine Edges" which now gives you complete flexibility to have beautifully smooth edges around any selections. It would've been nice to see the integration of powerful selection tool like a plugin that you can buy extra called fluid mask, this would really justify the upgrade to CS4.

Should you upgrade? Only if you have Photoshop CS or earlier... Should you buy if you haven't had it before? Without shadow of a doubt, it's that good that I wouldn't even recommend a trial version as you will use this for everything from image manipulation, leaflet and poster design, web graphics and HTML email templates and more! Yes it's expensive but worth every single penny.
