VINE VOICEon 2 December 2008
To coincide with the release of DBZ season 7, funimation have also released the next re-mastered movie double feature. This time we get movies #5 Cooler's Revenge and #6 The return of Cooler. Unlike the previous Dragon ball Z movies, these movies actually have some relevance to the series. The main antagonist for the two movies is none other than Frieza's brother Cooler and These movies are set after Goku defeats Frieza in season 3. Cooler, desperate to uphold his family honour, vows to get revenge for his brothers defeat and hence attacks the Earth. As can be expected from the DBZ movies, they are low on story and high on action. Each movie coming in at around 45 minutes each, are mainly going to be enjoyed by DBZ fans, as the movies make no attempt to fill in th viewer with who the characters or anything else like that. So to enjoy these movies, you really need to have some knowledge of the series and should have at least watched seasons 1 - 3.

Cooler's revenge was the better movie of the set as it has some brilliant action and if you watch the American audio version there is a fantastic rock soundtrack featuring bands such as Disturbed and Deftones. The Return Of Cooler sees Cooler returning after he was defeated by the Z fighters in the previous movie. The plot and story concept of this movie is very lazy and it makes me think that the creators were running out of ideas. Furthermore, the rock soundtrack that made the last movie (as well as the Lord Slug movie) so great has been abandoned. There is still as somewhat rock influenced soundtrack but it is no where near as thrilling as the previous movies. In my opinion, the soundtrack that includes the rock bands makes the DBZ movies actually feel fresh and original. The movies that don't include the rock soundtrack sound reminiscent to the music from the series and at the same time makes the movie feel like it is just an overlong TV episode. Alternatively, there is the usual Japanese voice and audio selection as well as the English language and Japanese audio, so long time fans of the series may prefer these.

The design of this DVD set is the same as previous double features with the 2 discs kept in a nice metallic case. This time there is a picture of Metal Cooler embossed onto the front. It's good that funimation are sticking with this design, so by the time all 13 of the movies are released, the collection should look pretty cool.
Once again, the only special features are a collection of the same old trailers and that's it.
The next movie double feature, set to be released with season 8 contains movies 7 and 9. Bojack Unbound and Super Android 13. It seems like they are going to release the three broly films in a triple feature.

If you have been collecting the DBZ movies, then prepare yourself for more of the same action, adventure and paper thin plot crammed into a 45 minute feature. If you havent seen the movies yet then you're not really missing much, but if you have seen the series and need some more DBZ fixation then these movies are a decent purchase.

Great films, and quality blu-ray, but I imported this to the UK from the USA, but in the notes there is no mention that it is a region A encoded disc. Most blu rays are region free, but this one is unfortunatley not. So if you are ordering this item outside the Americas I suggest using a programme such as AnyDVD to play it.
