I have liked this artist ever since I saw him at the Barbican; great on his own or with Mr Metheny, he is a most accomplished keyboard player who manages to put a great spin on at least one song per album you already know well. His version of Exit Music for a Film is brilliant. If you like Jazz and you like piano, this is well worth a look.

This is a joint review of the two trio albums "Day is Done" and "Live" featuring Brad Mehldau (piano) with Larry Grenadier (double-bass) and Jeff Ballard (drums).

Day is Done, recorded in studio on March 13-15, 2005 is the first release by this Mehldau new trio, with Ballard on drums instead of Jorge Rossy. The new drummer brings some more energy and complexity to the rhythm, while the successful ingredients of the trio previous recordings are all there: popular tunes beautifully reinterpreted (Beatles, Radiohead, Paul Simon, Nick Drake and more as you never heard them), lyrical and grooving improvisations with incredible dialogues between the pianist left and right hands as well as between the three instruments. Tracks run one after the other leaving the listener to enjoy just beautiful music. Totally recommended!

Live, recorded live at the Village Vanguard on October 11-15, 2006 is the first live recording of this Brad Mehldau trio. Amazing interpretations of pop-rock tunes, jazz standards and Mehldau compositions combined in a relaxed live setting with plenty of time for improvising. Compared to the live recordings of the previous Mehldau trio there is more complexity, the mood is a little darker, groove more hypnotic. Less accessible than "Day is Done", deserves some more time to be fully appreciated and enjoyed. Totally recommended only if you can give it the listening time it deserves!

I like the more adventurous playing on this CD, his earlier recordings get too light and well mannered for me. More tuneful than Jarrett but less heavy than Corea. Will keep this one (sold the others).

This album is fantastic - love the Nick Drake and Lennon/McCartney covers. All who enjoyed hearing Mehldau play Radiohead should hear this!
