Joan Osborne is still best known over here in the UK for the huge hit single "(What If God Was) One Of Us", but her career is so much more than that.

From her own Blues / soul albums to a stint with the Grateful Dead to a scene stealing appearance in the rockumentary "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" right on to the 2006 country album " Pretty Little Stranger", she has always managed to dash preconceptions and come up trumps. If you get the chance, track down one of the live recordings of the shows she performed with Phil Lesh & Friends for some truly amazing music. But, now, a year after its US release, her latest album is getting a UK release.

It's a hybrid album, part tribute / part original, almost a follow up to her 2002 covers album "How Sweet It Is", but with half a dozen new songs to keep her old fans happy. Ms Osborne has a fabulously expressive voice which turns staples such as 'Ain't No Sunshine', the title track and the Bobby "Blue" Bland staple 'I've Got To Use My Imagination' into her very own tales.

She also takes on the smooth Stylistics classic, 'Break Up to Make Up', and turns in an emotional reading that suggests it's a song she can easily relate to. On the down side, 'Heat Wave' by Martha & the Vandellas was always grossly overrated and Joan fails, following in the footsteps of Linda Ronstadt, at redeeming it. One of two bonus tracks plucked from the the motion picture soundtrack, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", alongside an absolute killer version of Jimmy Ruffin's 'What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted', that takes one of my all time favourite songs, and makes it sound brand new. It was amazing when it first came out, and it's amazing now.

Of the original songs 'Eliminate The Night' and 'I Know What's Goin' On' can hold their high in exalted company and the album is bolstered with a UK only bonus track, 'Everybody Needs A Friend', to make it an essential album for those of us who've followed Ms Osbornes career through its winding road.

I was watching the film "Standing in the Shadow of Motown" when this diva appeared on camera singing "Heatwave" - Wow! This woman has a voice that could melt cheese - so smooth, so soulful, so raunchy! I just had to hear more from her!

I reviewed the albums she'd released and contacted Amazon who quickly supplied "Breakfast in Bed" and I was not disappointed - Joan Osborne is in a class of her own! I was wondering where she'd been hiding all these years and it was only later that I realised this was the same lass who sang "(What If God Was) One of Us?" - well, she's not being idle and her move into Blues and Soul has reaped massive benefits for we fans!

She is a fantastic vocal talent!

Fantastic production. And just when you think it couldn't get better, along comes by far the best track on the album "What becomes of the broken hearted". It was that very track that made me buy it!

I bought this album on the back of hearing Joan's album 'Little Wild One' which I thought was brilliant. Although this one did not excite me as much it is a truly great album and to my mind Ms. Osborne's voice is one of the best around today, strong, clear and with plenty of punch. I'm not going to go on about which tracks are better than others. If you enjoy great singing by a great voice buy this album, sit back and let it grab you.

I am really biased because I love Joan Osborne. Her voice is amazing. Only gave this CD 4 stars because I am not yet convinced about the choice of songs. Mainly cover versions and I prefer her own compositions. But the song choice is made redundant when she applies her voice to the soul songs. This is a real treat, grab a bottle of wine, turn the lights down low, put this on your player, sit back and enjoy.

Bought it in a hurry. Love her "Relish" record. This is totally different, still ok, but not to my taste. Make sure to listen to samples before buying.

Edit : After listening to it few times I decided to change rating to 4 start, the more I listen to it the more I like it.
