5.0 out of 5 stars more soul in one shriek than most can manage in a whole career, 4 Nov 2008
This review is from: Live At The Hideout (Audio CD)
sounds even better live than on her recorded albums, the soul and passion here is from another era that we can't hope to replicate.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 20th Century Icon for Hope, 17 Dec 2008

In this era where black music has become worthless trash sung by unthinking uneducated ingrates preening and posing before all, Mavis Staples is a reminder of how great black music was. The voice is more smokey than of yore, but the passion is there, the resistance is there, the greatness is there. firmly In The Tradition of struggle this is majestic music. P Diddy et al, please cock an ear...and be ashamed.....be very ashamed

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow !, 9 Feb 2009

This is the stuff. A true legend, backed by a wonderful 3 piece led by Rick Holmstrom - a great guitarist who can do that Pop Staples stuff as and when. Sleeve notes says Mavis is 69, but the voice and attitude is bang on where it always has been. Picking up on a comment from a previous reviewer, I reckon Diddy and all those other fools ought to do us all a favour, and jump in a hot bath armed with a razor blade - metaphorically speaking that is. Buy this disc, play and rejoice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Integrity, taste and lots of soul, 14 Oct 2011
This review is from: Live At The Hideout (Audio CD)
Mavis Staples is a genuine talent of real depth but this is a good not great album. With songs of this quality and an artist of this stature comparing this with material that other reviewers have mentioned is like comparing fine wine and ditch water. However, this is not prime-time Mavis. Her voice has lost some of it's dynamic control, she's struggles at times with notes and the nuances of tone she had in her youth have gone: but there's no shortage of soul or emotional maturity.

If you're a guitar player you will get an object lesson in how to accompany a singer and this has to the most delicious electric guitar tone I have ever heard. This album is one for the fans but not the place to start for those not familiar with her best work.

As a fan of blues, soul & gospel (the Staple Singers being a long time favourite) - this single CD by Mavis was far and away one of the best I've listened to - marvellous recording.
