5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect solution for secure storage, 25 Jan. 2009

One of the blargest issues at the moment is data security, especially if you work with personal data. As such it is increasingly important that we take steps to ensure that any infomation stored is kept secure and can not be used by unautherised people. I work within the healthcare sector and as such can have patient details in databases on my pc as such I have had to ensure this infomation is protected against prting eyes.

This enrypted Hard Drive is the perfect solution, the hardware encrytion mechanism ensures the drive does not suffer a performace hit as it would do if the encryption were software based. The only real downside to this solution is if the password is forgotten then it is impossible to retrieve the data, and you would need to wipe the drive and start again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - the GENUINE "Black Armor" 320gb version, 21 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Maxtor 320GB BlackArmor Encrypted 2.5" HDD USB 2.0 (Personal Computers)
Excellent and easy to use security.
Plug the HDD in.
Enter the password.
Then you have access to the files - add files easily by drag and drop.
Unplug the drive and it's secured by the password.
NOTHING COULD BE SIMPLER.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH OTHER SEAGATE DRIVES THAT NOW WRONGLY USE THE "BLACK ARMOR" NAME (example the WS110). Maxtor were taken over by Seagate. This means that Seagate now have control of the "Black Armor" name and wrongly use it on other HDDs - wrongly so in my opinion, having made the mistake in buying a WS110 so-called Black Armor by Seagate.

The WS110 is horrible - it crashes Windows and it is a misnomer for Seagate to use the former Maxtor brand name "Black Armor" on it's WS110 HDD.

The former Maxtor version was EASY TO USE - as in the 320gb product being reviewed here
- simply set a password when plugged in the drag & drop files to the drive.
Unplug the HDD and it was secured by password.
To access the files plug it in again and enter the password.

In contrast the latest Seagate WS110 1TB misnomer "Black Armor" that I've bought which is a pile of garbage - firstly it crashes Windows Explorer regularly
(unlike other external hard drives)
and secondly it's so-called security is either non-existant or too complicated to configure.

Seagate's website unhelpful too re: the WS110.

All in all a big mistake buying the WS110 drive.
Wished that I'd bought this 320gb version instead - or better still wish that Seagate hadn't taken over Maxtor a pinched the good name of Black Armor.

I've had this several months now. It was really easy to set up - just plug it in and the software gets installed, choose a password you won't forget, and off you go. It's small but robustly made, and fast. Very happy with it.
