2.0 out of 5 stars Beware if you use Windows 7
I bought this scanner to scan my negatives at home as we have a Canon A4 document scanner at work and it is great. The 5600F seems like a well made product - good quality materials and well packaged. However, even with help from the Canon Suppoort Desk and after downloading updated software from their site, I could not get this product to work with Windows 7...

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality colour scanner for 35mm film, prints and general documents, 17 Jan 2010

Having transferred to digital film some time ago I had a cupboard full of 35mm slides and for a while had been tempted to buy a dedicated slide scanner but apart from semi professional slide scanners costing hundreds of pounds all the reviews of "domestic quality" scanners were quite honestly awful. Then I read a favourable review of the Canon Canoscan 5600F. Not only was this a general purpose flatbed scanner for documents etc., it promised high quality digital images from 35mm colour positive and negative film.

I have been using this scanner now for one week (with a PC running XP) and begun the task of transferring my sizeable library of slides to digital format.

It is so simple to use that I have not even needed to read the instruction manual (apart from an initial browse through the Quick Start Guide).

Open the 'MP Navigator EX' window, set the film type and required resolution (up to 4800 dpi), load the slides into the tray (up to four at a time), and begin the process. Almost immediately you get pre-scan views of the slides, select those you wish to scan and begin. Depending on the resolution, scanning will take about 2 minutes per slide, quite slow with a gentle whirring noise from the scanner but the resulting quality is worth the wait. When the scans are complete you can select from a variety of file formats and on saving, the images are transferred in a folder to your desired location.

The resulting quality and colour of the images is simply outstanding. When scanned at 4800dpi setting, A4 prints at 300 dpi are readily obtainable and 5"x7" prints at 300 dpi with scan setting of 2400 dpi.

There are many other features that I have yet to explore but I can thoroughly recommend this scanner to anyone wanting to archive film to digital format.

This scanner has been very simple to use and has produced very clear pictures from slides some of which are 40 years old. Excellent product.

I bought the scanner to be able to copy family photos to share with my sister after the death of my mother. I have been more than happy with the results so far. I am even scanning the hundreds of slides from the 70s again with very pleasing results. Other paper copying is simple and quick especially when e-mailing.

5.0 out of 5 stars CanoScan 5600F Scanner, 8 Feb 2011
This review is from: Canon CanoScan 5600F Scanner USB2.0 Film and Slide 14.6msec/line 4800x9600dpi A4 Ref 2924B008AA (Personal Computers)
Did the item come on time -absolutely!!!

It did have a UK socket and power lead.

The scanner does work with mac 10.3 and also photo shop and latest version of windows.

You wont need that additonal software if your using Adobe photoshop.

You will have to make sure certain divers are down loaded from the cannon web site.

The process is very good and very quick scanner.

The unit is quite bulky but makes up for that in quality of scanning negatives and slides and scanning documents.

Good purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for scanning 35mm film strips, 13 Mar 2010

I previously owned a Canoscan 3200F, which was fine, but I needed to scan lots of 35mm film negative strips (4 in a strip) and this new 5600F seemed to make things a lot faster as it scans an entire film strip in one go, without so much manual handling. It is excellent in this respect. The improved "film strip guide" hardware, with its easy-to-use positioning, and the fast start up time for the lamp(s) are a great bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars CanoScan 5600F Scanner, 20 April 2011
This review is from: Canon CanoScan 5600F Scanner USB2.0 Film and Slide 14.6msec/line 4800x9600dpi A4 Ref 2924B008AA (Personal Computers)
Looked around for resonable priced scanner to download my 30year old plus 35mm slides onto my computer, after checking out various reports on scanners, decided to purchase the CanoScan 5600F Scanner, really pleased with the construction of this scanner, very easy to setup and operate, only minus so far is, scan time could be a bit quicker, really pleased with the quality of the 100 plus slides downloaded to date, as long as you are not in a hurry for your scans, I would definitely recommend this scanner.

Fantastic quality for either photos, slides or negatives. Canon technical support is also very impressive after I had a small start up problem that they solved immediately. Would definitely recommend this product to any prospective purchaser.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware if you use Windows 7, 27 Aug 2011
This review is from: Canon CanoScan 5600F Scanner USB2.0 Film and Slide 14.6msec/line 4800x9600dpi A4 Ref 2924B008AA (Personal Computers)
I bought this scanner to scan my negatives at home as we have a Canon A4 document scanner at work and it is great. The 5600F seems like a well made product - good quality materials and well packaged. However, even with help from the Canon Suppoort Desk and after downloading updated software from their site, I could not get this product to work with Windows 7. Apparently there is a known problem with the scanner working on this operating system and a very awkward solution - too awkward for me as I'm not very technical - so I am having to send this scanner back.

This scanner is not small but the picture quality and colour is brilliant. I'm using for scanning artwork and it picks up every detail.
