I have played the earlier Call of Duty games. They were a lot of fun but became very "same-ish". They weren't very replayable. However, after playing CoD4 I immediately started again....and again! It is just as much fun every time.

It has an excellent story line. Surprisingly (and pleasingly for us Brits), the lion's share of the action is with the SAS. The acting is good (and amusing in a non-politically correct fashion at times).

I was stunned by the graphics. They are almost cinematic. Of course, graphics alone don't make a game but in this case it helps immerse you in the story. The realistic scenery, coupled with the physics make it feel real.

Bullets can now pass through some materials (eg walls). It's no longer possible for you (or your enemies) to take cover behind a sheet of paper.

There are two breaks from the all-out action. One is a stealth sniper mission. Normally, I find those pretty boring in a shooter game. Not this time. I loved it. There is also a mission where you act as a gunner in an AC130 Spectre. You sit in complete safety as you blast the enemy with an assortment of lethal weapons. Your only worry is blowing your own side to smithereens.

In the old days, I would always put tactical shooters ahead of FPS corridor shooters. However, the latest tactical shooters have been "dumbed down"(except, maybe Ghost Recon Advanced Warrior). CoD4 is linear with no direct control over squad mates. Nevertheless it's a great substitute for that feeling of reality that tactical shooters used to provide.

I thought this game was a pretty average first person shooter, with some good cinematic scenes, and an OK story line.
SINGLE PLAYER
In the single player campaign, don't expect much. The story line is a very simple one, and it is told through news reports, and some cut scenes. Although the story is not to the best standards, the levels are well designed and there are some very cool cinematic moments in the game. There is only one campaign to play through, but there is no co-op option, at least not for the PC.
MULTIPLAYER
This consists of picking a game mode and running and shooting people. As you level up, new weapons and 'perks' become available. Don't let this put you of, just because someone has the ability to pull out a RPG doesn't mean they will hit you. The ability to pick a variety of different perks that you can use to improve certain aspects of combat is unique and fun to do. Creating your own class is a fun part of the game, but as you reach higher levels, it becomes a longer process to level up, and get quickly get boring.

I was slightly wary when buying this game as I had the Call of Duty 2 and it was great - but I didn't think this would be up to much. But how wrong I was. The single player mode is challenging and gets very addictive as you shoot from helicopters, go on sniper missions and hide in the grass, and, of course, just good old battling it out against your enemies. The multi player mode is also fantastic with a thriving online community and lots of different playing modes to keep you playing for hours - and in fact, this is actually where I play the majority of Call of Duty 4. All in all great game, deserves Game of the Year award, and gets a 9/10 from me.

Dear All

Call of Duty 4 is without a doubt a great platform for a first person shooter to get started. Graphics are good and weapons are first class. If you had any neg feedback, you would want bigger maps to heighten up the fear level as you creep about wanting to hose someone down with machine gun fire.

Or blow off someone's head with a sniper rifle over a huge distance.

It takes gaming to a new level.

Shoot first and last, no dirty trick is unacceptable while planting our claymore and watching as they run in.

The only pity is online people get grenade happy with spoils the fights sometimes or they spawn in a small area where you died as soon as you spawn such as at the container level.

This is what computers action games are all about.

If you have the cash then get it, you will be hooked.

Yours

first off, this was the first game I played on my new pc, and it really felt like I had turned a new corner. For a start, the games' cinematic experience is great , not only does it look and sound great, I felt involved with the team throughout the game. I'm not for storyline based games this kept me interested without too much attention being paid to what was going on. The single player was good I completed it on all difficulties, unusual as I usually play it through once. The multiplayer, is the larger volume of the game offering a huge amount of customization and progression, you'll find the single player lasts several hours whereas the multiplayer has kept me keen much much longer. this game is.now priced at around 10 pounds and I would recommend anyonewho likes fast paced shooters to try it, it'll be worth it!

The comparison between this version and the previous ones, gives only one answer: this is the best of all of them. In particular the scenarios, regarding the type and rendition of personages and the level of the scenes, are outstanding. The weapons and their fidelity, with respect to the real ones, deserve 9 points, in a scale from 1 to 10.
The single player is beautiful but of too much short duration. The multiplayer can be considered exceptional and it deserves 10 points.
This version, in a few words, is of many satisfactions to the lovers of this type of simulation. In synthesis, it can be recommended to all players, independently from their level of skill. A preference that will not disappoint them.
The fact that has been elected the better game of the year, is not an accidental choice.

This is an excellent game, I played it on both Xbox 360 and PS3 before getting it on the PC.

Its by far the best of the call of duty series to date easily beating MW2 and MW3 into the ground, although many FPS players would say Cod2 is better!

what a game,just superb!
im not going to blether on about it ,im just gonna say this.....
buy this game if ur pc can run it,it wont be dissapointing, single player is good but a tad short, just play through on hard or veteran, that will make it play a bit longer as the enemy are hard as nails.
the multiplayer on the otherhand is just too good to put into words, its just so much fun playin online, sure when u start its tough as most ppl have playing the game for some time now and will now all the good killing spots, but it is huge fun ,once u rank up and unlock the better guns and perks it really is one hell of a game, dont delay buy it as soon as u can.
11/10 in my opinion,i just hope when Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is realeased its even better than this one.

Many, and most, people know Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the multiplayer...which is excellent. But, I thought I'd take a moment to mention how brilliant the solo, single player, mission and story actually is. I've played a lot of FPS games, almost all of them in fact!, and this stands out as one of the best. Returning characters from previous COD games add a familar, if paradoxial, flavour which I found very pleasing, while the actual levels are some of the most original I've seen, and experienced. I won't spoil your fun, so will only say that you should expect something a bit different from this title, and should snap it up right away. Get bashed up, beaten up and horrified. Modern Warfare is no kids game.
