This review is from: Executive Koala [DVD] [2005] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
If you take executive koala purely on plot alone the basic premise and narrative conventions deployed in this film are fairly straight forward, amnesiac with missing wife ends up suspected of murder after new girlfriend is found brutally slain; while trying to clear his name the protagonist uncovers disturbing truths about his missing memory and the true nature of his relationship with his wife, the film could from this be taken to be a depalma-lite psychothriller like many straight-to-video japanese potboilers out there on dvd, but...
The protagonist is a six-foot japanese speaking koala, his boss is a sinister rabbit and the helpful convienience store clerk is a frog. The film ends up playing like some kind of pitch-black comedy, everybody in the film is deadly serious throughout as if in a genuinely serious thriller, every other cast member is clearly human and behaves as if these giant anthropomorphic characters are completely normal.
Director Minoru Kawasaki (director of other gems such as calamari wrestler and the rug cop) has been labelled the japanese ed wood, which is actually quite unfair, his films are meta low budget, but abley directed and well shot with a bizarre sense of humour and surreality you don't find elswhere (plus some great costumes!). Certainly one worth considering for fans of japanese cinema.
