2.0 out of 5 stars Curse of The Mummy!, 28 July 2009
This review is from: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
The Mummy and The Mummy Returns were no masterpieces but they were fun movies. Filled with great action sequences, humor and brilliant characters/actors they were a joy to watch. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is nothing like the first 2 films. It's not fun anymore it has just become silly. The main distraction for me was the departure of Rachel Weisz and her awful replacement Maria Bello. Weisz and Fraser had great chemistry but now with Bello on the scene that chemistry has disappeared. Luke Ford plays Alex (Fraser and Bello's son) and is also miscasted! Alex now has an American accent but was British in Mummy Returns plus he looks as old as Fraser! He lacks likability and to be honest is a bore! Rob Cohan takes over as Director and does a poor job. The film isn't as dark as the previous films and has now turned into a cheesy, dumb action flick with dire dialogue, poor acting and lazy direction. However visually on blu-ray it looks great! Let's just hope they leave the mummy to rest now!

2.0 out of 5 stars No story line - don't waste your time, 15 Sep 2009

This review is from: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
If I could I would have given this film just 1 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed the first two Mummy films and was really disappointed in this one. Not only is there barely a story line, it never becomes clear why the two Chinese soldiers wanted to reawaken the emperor in the first place. There are no emotional bonds between any of the characters preventing the viewer totally from diving into the story. Maria Bello who replaces Rachel Weisz as Evie tries too hart to talk like Weisz' Evie but rarely succeeds. Instead she overacts most of the time. And for the chemistry between Evie and O'Connell - forget it! And it's nothing to do with the fact that they've been married 20 years and are in a bit of a rut professionally. It's just not there. Don't waste your time on this one, just the first two films again and enjoy. My copy of this DVD is going straight to the next charity shop.

1.0 out of 5 stars Abominable Snowmen!!!? Abominable movie!!!, 30 Sep 2010

This review is from: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
Sensational visual effects but one of the worst movies I've ever seen. They seem to be making movies which are just visual effects. No plot complexity, sub plot or script. Brendan Fraser is truly awful. The plot is a derivative, monolinear thing with the same old same old... though there is a feeble attempt at a sub plot involving familial tension and love. The love interest is poorly developed and cringeworthy. In fact the scene with the most impact (and it lasts just two seconds) is where the classic 'evil asian woman' refuses to let go of her love even when he's being dragged into a grinder. Most scenarios were tired a long time ago. The bad guys can't shoot straight even though they're regular soldiers and did you ever wonder what happened to all those Star Trek extras who you just knew were there solely to get bumped off? Well they got work with this director. This is a childish movie but not for children. Save your money. I won't be giving my copy shelf room.

1.0 out of 5 stars a disgraceful adition to the series, 13 Sep 2011
This review is from: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
i can't recall a film as bad as this, hugely disappointing
a lot of people will say this is good kid's movie or family flim well guess what theses films Aren't for families or kids they horror's FOR ADULTS! the first two were brilliant with horror/action/adventure with a bit of comedy mixed in but this fails on every level with it's kiddish humour
what I loved about first two is it horrors with skin being ripped off sort of stuff and brilliant action definitely for adults or older age group anyway to make the third one a kid's film is the ultimate Betrayal
the mummies wouldn't scare a five year old
the script is like something out of a children's TV show
terrible on every level compared to first two this is some sort of kids film don't waste your hard-earnt money on this it's not worthy to be in any box set near the other two.
maria belo is a good actress but isn't right for this bring back rachel weisz!

This review is from: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
I loved the original Mummy movie -it was rip roaring, silly entertainment that didn't take itself seriously and was all the more fun for it. I was excited for this one and approved the move from Egypt to China/the choice to create a new Mummy to keep the franchise getting stale.

Shame the end result IS stale. The dialogue's cheesier than ever but less witty and self aware, the fabulous John Hannah is demoted by the writers to the poor and unfunny comic relief with a set of really atrocious gags that are unworthy of him, and gamely as Maria Bello tries Rachel Weisz is missed. You no longer care about these characters as you did in the first movies - Rick and Evie are now just nauseating, their son has zero charisma and the new characters have no charm. The first Mummy, Imhotep, was tragic as well as evil, there was some depth to his story - this Emperor's just a one note villain. The much touted big fight between Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh is a let down, and their talents both acting and in martial arts are criminally underused. And don't get me started on the abominable snowmen.

There was so much potential in this story and with these characters/actors but I feel like the script and dialogue really let them down. It's a dandy enough way to pass an hour or two but it lacks the joie de vivre and self deprecating charm of the first Mummy movie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor effort, don't bother and avoid, 9 Jun 2010
This review is from: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
The first Mummy film was good, it was like an Indiana Jones movie with a monster thrown in to the mix and the Mummy 2 was alright but not as good as the first one, but Tomb of the Dragon Emperor however is easily the worst in the franchise, ranking about the same in my opinion as Scorpion King.

This isn't just because it is just the same story again, there are a lot of things I didn't like about this film like Rachel Weisz being recast (I guess she was the smart one not wanting to do this film), Jet Li's villain is just not as threatening or terrifying as Imhotep and most confusing of all, the heroic O'Connell's son Alex is now the stereotypical American hero, despite having a stereotypical English accent in the second movie.

Then there's the heavy reliance on overly obvious CGI, uninteresting locations, bad acting, predictable plot and shallow characters and motivations, and you've got a film that never really needed to be made. There was no cliffhanger or hint at a sequel at the end of the second movie, so why did they think making Dragon Emperor was a good idea?

If you're looking for a decent adventure monster film, go buy the first Mummy film or even the second one, just ignore this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terracotta Warriors in Turkey Twizzler, 27 Jan 2009

I really enjoyed the first two Mummy films, but Mummy 3 just left me cold.

You're left with a distinct impression that the script writers may have made up the story as they went along. The result is something along the lines of "The Terracotta Warriors Meet the Yetis".

A month's vacation in the Pool of Eternal Life on the Costa del Shangri-La couldn't revive this turkey.

If you must watch bad films, try Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes [1977]

1.0 out of 5 stars How did they screw this up?, 1 July 2009
By
Mummies, Yeti's and hot asian chicks - this film should be awesome, it isn't. The entire film has a chaotic and 'thrown together' feel. The first 2 movies were good, this is just rubbish, and certainly not worth paying blu-ray prices for (although video is good). If you fancy it I suggest renting it first, I paid over 20 for it and regret it hugely!

1.0 out of 5 stars MUMMIFIED CHEESE, 30 Mar 2009
This review is from: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
Excellent special effects; Hideously weak script; Cheesy performances... if there was an oscar for 'Most Annoying Performance' then Maria Bello would certainly get it... in comparison to the prior two 'Mummy' movies, there is none!
