4.0 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack, 30 Oct 2008
This review is from: Rocknrolla - Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The Rocknrolla soundtrack does what all good soundtracks should. It reminds you of the best parts of the movie. Starting off with Black Strobe's "I'm a Man" which is my personal favourite track this album then moves along like the "Lock Stock" and "Snatch" soundtracks. Full of cool forgotten tunes, a few new ones and also a sprinkling of the movie dialogue it's a great listen. Rock and Roll Queen by the Subways and The Gun by Lou Reed are other personal faves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch, 7 Feb 2009
This review is from: Rocknrolla - Original Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Watching the film, Rocknrolla, I was struck by how well chosen the music on the soundtrack was; this cd also stands up on its own merits as a solid collection of some of the best "buzz" music you're likely to hear.

The inclusion of some of the memorable bits of dialogue is an interesting touch & one that will constantly reinforce the link between the music & the film.

Rock & Roll Queen by the Subways is one of the stand out tracks & the inclusion of Waiting For A Train by Flash & The Pan is a master stroke.

Fab.

Funny thing about getting older is it becomes hard to tell whether a music CD is rubbish, or you're just losing your musical faculties. I was listening to a number of albums in the car (e.g. Mutations by Beck & Hot Fuzz Soundtrack) & couldn't get the killer hook.

Then I played this CD. OH MY GOD is it good! Even though I haven't (yet) seen the film, I got into this instantly.

From the first dialogue track ('Ppl ask the question'), the Gangster Rock ethos floods out of the stereo, with awesome tracks such as 'I'm a Man' & 'Rock & Roll Queen'. Highlights also include 'The Gun' by Lou Reed and 'Such a Fool', although every track is the sort of raw, gritty heart-pounding brilliance that one would expect from the title, but which few could deliver...

Like all truly excellent soundtracks, this one has a load of tracks you probably haven't heard or (if you have) you can't place (e.g. 'Bank Robber' by the Clash).
Furthermore, the dialogue is an excellent selection AND (unlike Hot Fuzz Soundtrack) is separated from the music, so it can be sampled by aspiring DJ's.

Truth be known, musical appreciation does not fade with age but rather becomes more astute. Not only is this shown by the fact that compilations such as these can be filtered from the usual dross, but also by the fact that Guy Ritchie can still make soundtracks as good as his zenith of Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels & Snatch. Here's hoping the film is as good...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good in the film; good as a CD, 24 July 2009

Listening to this reminds you that there was a great selection of tunes in the film. These ranged from the obscure to those I had heard before. An electic selection that some fits together in much the same way the Pulp Fiction soundtrack does. The dialogue selections are amusing.
