4.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Back
I first saw this film as a young(ish) man, and it impressed me hugely. Now, (a good 30 years later, I think) I still enjoyed it, but it's mannered and some of the acting... well, never mind. It's a fascinating snatch of the mood and feel of its time and valuable history for that reason.

As a movie? Well, it's still a good tale.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's a good film in here somewhere, actually, a great film.
If this was re-edited to show all the action scenes, the treachery of the Posner gang and just a faint smattering of the underlying message then this would be as well known today as it was on re-release in 1973. I understand that this is a very personal project for Tom Laughlin and despite being a product of their time, (Vietnam War, mis-trust of authority, and racism)...

If this was re-edited to show all the action scenes, the treachery of the Posner gang and just a faint smattering of the underlying message then this would be as well known today as it was on re-release in 1973. I understand that this is a very personal project for Tom Laughlin and despite being a product of their time, (Vietnam War, mis-trust of authority, and racism) the messages are no less relevant today, but the pacifist diatribe and the rage against the government are laid on way too thick and are so slow and boring that they don't make for a decent movie experience. Having said that, the film has lots to offer; the martial arts sequences were years ahead of the Kung Fu craze, but not ahead of Bruce Lee as he appeared as Kato in the Green Hornet before the first release of Billy Jack; again though, I'm given to wonder why the craze didn't rocket after the public got to see Billy Jack "go berserk". Laughlin is truly excellent in the lead role and reminds me of a young Tommy Lee Jones, the guy playing Posner is fine and young man playing his son is suitably sniveling, but almost everyone at the freedom ranch can't act for toffee and for the sake of the movie should have been left on the cutting room floor.

Some good action, but its really dated. The story seems to get lost about half way through. The movie could have been cut ti thirty minuets & would have not lost any of the best bits of the film..
Its sad as it could have been one of the best marshal arts films ever made.
