5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD, 25 Oct 2008
This review is from: Jazz Icons - Oscar Peterson - Live In '63, '64 And '65 [DVD] [1963] [2008] (DVD)
This is an excellent DVD and brilliantly showcases the superb Oscar Peterson Trio that comprised Oscar, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. The first session was recorded in 1963 in Sweden with Roy Eldridge guesting on one track. Things really hot up on the 1964 session from Denmark, which is the highlight of the DVD, displaying what a remarkable group this was. There are magnificent versions of Soon, On Green Dolphin Street, Bags Groove, Tonight, C-Jam Blues and Hymn to Freedom. The energy and intensity of the group is phenomenal. The final session is from 1965 recorded in Finland and opens with a furiously paced Yours is My Heart Alone, and Clark Terry joins the Trio on subsequent tracks. The overall packaging is excellent - picture quality, although black and white, is very good indeed considering these are historic recordings and there are also interesting liner notes by Doug Ramsey and an introduction to the DVD by Kelly Peterson. Jazz Icons have produced a quality package that is highly recommended.

I didn't think this was possible, that this trio would have survived on film in this quality! All of these performances were film in three of the nordic nations: Sweden (from where I am), Finland and Denmark... witch makes me consider the possibility of more turning up in the future! There must be at least some of this stuff hidden in vaults in, for example, the UK, germany, France, Italy and of course the USA. But for now a big bow for the people involved in this series! Thank you!

The only negative thing is that the performances from Sweden are to short, as the trio had been told to keep the length down in order to be able to play more tunes. I had rather heard two or three performances where the trio really got caught up in things (like they do in the danish session) rather than listening to these five far to short ones.

Anyway, a big bow! Wounderful sound and picture!

I bought this for my husband for our Wedding Anniversary. He is really pleased with it as it is his kind of music - not really mine though.
