3.0 out of 5 stars A great session musician does not a great performer make
The long lost "Skyboat" album being at last available on CD is a right cause for joy in pristine sound (ABC's 1970s records in my experience were never high quality product pressings) and especially the UK radio favourite but non-hit single release "Morning Glory".

Amazon says: "Out of print for three decades, they are much treasured vinyl items for those lucky enough to own copies".

Damn right they are! I've been waiting for a CD of "Skyboat" for YEARS - it's one of my all-time favourite albums. The BEST version of "Morning Glory" (even better than the soul cover by James and Bobby Purify), the BEST version of "Everlasting Love" (even better than the hit by The Love Affair), the BEST version of The Temptations' "Walk (And Don't Look Back)", plus great tracks like "Gettysburg" and "Southwind" - all delivered with a rich singing voice and a unique guitar style - it's a classic.

The follow-up album "Hymn To The Seeker", included here, was a little disappointing by comparison with its illustrious predecessor (it tips over a little too heavily into pretentious pseudo-mysticism for my liking), but still has some enjoyable music.

Can't wait to get hold of this on CD at last.

Skyboat, the greatest album I ever bought as a kid, and I bought shed-loads. The guitar, voice, songs, arrangements are perfect. Loved Area Code and Barefoot J as well. A great time for American music!

At last I no longer have to live in fear of scratching my vinyl album that's been a treasured possession for over 30 years! Mac's slide-wah guitar is one of the most distinctive and beautiful sounds around. Hear it at it's very best on Morning Glory: a slice of absolute perfection that should be in everyone's collection. Buy it, love it and spread the word!

I have both albums on vinyl, but it's good to have them on C.D The set is worth the money for Morning Glory alone with its wonderful slide guitar.

The long lost "Skyboat" album being at last available on CD is a right cause for joy in pristine sound (ABC's 1970s records in my experience were never high quality product pressings) and especially the UK radio favourite but non-hit single release "Morning Glory".

That Mac Gayden cuts his guitar licks with a wealth of experience including JJ Cale sessions is very much in evidence in this set's performances but the sad truth is that over two CD sides the whole lot does after a few hearings get rather boring in total. The reasons for this seem to be that: Gayden has a limited range of singing voice versus his guitar virtuosity; the backup musicians especially on the second set do not provide the fire and push to take the music above the ordinary (Gayden producing the second LP may have contributed) and the choice of songs especially on the second disc "Hymn to the seeker" seem very drawn out versus the tightness more evident on most of the first disc.

A welcome re-release to get ones hands on long lost great tracks but to my ears anyway not the all round masterpiece claimed.
