I found and bought an earlier model of this map-board for £4 at the Aldi in Bognor in 2007 and it's been excellent. The neck-mounting map case used by hill-walkers had never been useful and went straight to the re-cycle shop.
Unfortunately, the early version of this map-board sat up high, masked the speedo and blocked the Sat-Nav. Nor was the fitting so strong and I eventually snapped the mountings. A block of wood, carved and painted, has been an effective if inelegant fix. After 4 years of only moderate use the plastic envelope is splitting (perhaps I could have contacted Rixen and Kaul and replaced just this one disposable part?).
But, no worries, in 2011 the birthday fairy brought me the new version from Amazon which is significantly better (as it should be - it's 10 times more expensive!). It fits the middle of the bars much better than the older model and comes with a nifty wire-pull effect so I won't have to overtighten the clamps. The plastic sleeve is also better thought out so that it puts less strain on the weld - though it's not going to last for ever.
Hence 4 stars only - but I'm going to love it dearly. Maps add huge value to cycling even if you've a Sat-Nav on a clip as well.
(Safety note - The board itself is twin-wall plastic, so will squash if you're daft enough to land on it with your face).
