The first thing to say is that this DVD set is region 1 so you will need a multi-region DVD player. It would be too long and drawn out to go into too much detail about each film individually but basically these are not the sort of films that would win any Oscars or indeed, anything else. They are mostly about the teenage scene of beaches, babes and motors (and motorcycles). A couple of the films do aim at a more discerning audience; Weekend With the Babysitter is not quite the sleazy offering that the title would suggest; and Single Room Furnished is a cautionary tale for innocent girls looking for the good life.

According to the BBFC website, three of these films, The Pink Angels, Single Room Furnished and Malibu Beach were never released in the UK, and The Babysitter was cut for its cinematic release so this set is probably the only way to see them. It may also be true to say that they don't make them like this any more. I paid less than a tenner for this box set so I think it is quite good value.

With the title "Weekend with the Babysitter" one might expect a low budget drive-in movie feature about an old guy with a young girl. At least I wasn't surprised in that regard. Candy Wilson (Susan Romen) is the line flubbing babysitter. She has that fresh, girl-next-door, Misty Mudae, do-me look to her. Jim (George E. Carey) works for the film industry and is very successful. When Candy reads a script he has laying around, she makes suggestions in keeping with the time. She offers to take Jim out to a club so he can see what is going on with the day's youth, which look, act, and sound pretentious by today's standards.

Meanwhile the wife (Luanne Roberts) is gone for the weekend with their son. As it turns out she is a junky and her dealer is not a nice man and wants something in addition to cash for his payment. The film includes some bad stock music from the era as well as those pretty colors. The acting and script are not solid, but Susan Romen, who dropped out of the Hollywood scene after 2 films, brought out the perv in me.

PARENTAL GUIDE: N-word, sex and nudity (Susan Romen, Annik Bord) minor girl/girl action.

This is a good cheap introduction to the sub-culture of the exploitation films of the 70's, high art it isn't, but if you like this type of film, or think you might, then go for it.

Van Nuys Blvd certaintly won't be to the majority's taste.
The plot revolves around the now defunct cruising which took place between the 1950s and 1970s on the infamous ten mile spread.

The first twenty minutes or so with its funky soundtrack take you back in time to a place that has long since changed. Where you would cruise all night, pick up a girlfriend, smoke, have a beer or just make new friends.

If you like films LA based from this time period, then pick this dvd up- it's incredibly cheap.
There are plenty of comedy moments and the film for the most part rolls along nicely.

My only gripe is that the location keeps swapping too frequently. I had the impression beforehand that the whole movie would take place on the Boulevard, like Car Wash takes place almost entirely in a car wash. Thats the beauty and the magic of those films. This is lost here a bit.

Still historically interesting and some really nice camerawork.
