4.0 out of 5 stars Modern Classic with Matthau at his best, 24 May 2011
This review is from: Charley Varrick [DVD] (DVD)
This film has obviously influenced later works at least up to the 1990s and could arguably be described as a milestone. There is somewhat unusually much violence for the early 70s, but - hey folks,it's a Don Siegel movie!
What I like best next to suspense and an interesting storyline full of suprises is Walter Matthau acting one of his few unfunny parts. He is Charley Varrick, an independent criminal and one of the very few professionals in a world in which by far most outlaws are rather imbeciles or psychos than professionals. Varrick knows most of the time what to do and even more important what not to do and with his indestructible will to survive he even manages to trick the Mafia. Are there many Outlaws that shrewd and cold-blooded in the real world? Let's hope not.

P.S.: Subtitles would have been slightly nicer for non-native speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Crime Caper, 11 May 2008

Charley is a crop duster, a business which he has a hard time making a decent living out of if the trailer-park home he shares with his wife is anything to go by. So, Charley and his gang rob the occasional small-town bank to make a bit of extra cash. One day it all goes wrong, a cop gets killed, and the gang make off with far more money than they ought for such a small bank, and far more money than the bank is reporting stolen. Varrick correctly guesses that the bank has been laundering money for the Mafia, who naturally want the money back. Enter Molly (Joe Don Baker), a cheerfully vicious and amoral gang enforcer and generally unstoppable force-of-nature who is hell-bent on tracking down Varrick an his crew.

This is an example of how crime films should be made, films driven by superb scriptwriting and direction (Don Siegel), and dialogue and action delivered by competent actors. If this movies ever comes out on R2, I'll be first in the queue

(#1 REVIEWER)    (No. 1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Charley Varrick [DVD] (DVD)
I bought this many years back when this wasn't available on region 2. This is something of a less well known film from Don Siegel (Dirty Harry being the most obvious) However this has all the touches of a fine Siegel film including an excellent cast and storyline/script.

Walter Matthau plays the lead role of Charley Varrick a one time stunt pilot in his 50's who's living a fairly down and out/modest life in a caravan park. The opening scene of the burning overalls with Charley's name on it mirrors the ending where is becomes clear what's happened.
We start off with a bank robbery with Varrick and his main crime partner Harman Sullivan (Andrew Robinson) robbing a bank with Varricks wife Nadine (Jacqueline Scott) as the getaway driver, another gang member Dutcher is killed during the robbery and Nadine is also shot and dies shortly afterwards.

Despite the setbacks and less than ideal robbery execution Varrick and Sullivan head back to their caravan/trailer and discover a huge amount of money far more than a normal bank heist would yield. It soon becomes clear the pair have hit a "mob laundering" operation by pure accident. The rest of the story continues in the cat/mouse chase that follows the Mafia trying to get their money back, and the low profile Varrick trying to keep Sullivan under control, he's keen to spend the money and it brings attention to the gang. Hot on their trail is the mob "enforcer" in the form of Joe Don Baker (who plays Molly) and Maynard Boyle (John Vernon) is the mafia financial boss.

The film works on many levels, the story is interesting/exciting and the pacing is just about perfect there is enough time to get the grips with the story as a whole, yet enough action to ensure the viewer never has time to wander or lose interest. Cast wise just about all the performances are excellent Matthau playing a "nice bad guy" he at his best here in top form and Robinson does a good job as the edgy/hard to control gang member. Supporting cast is solid with Joe Don Baker's towering/broad appearance suiting the Mafia hit man character just great... Vernon is an old hand in roles like this.

It's rare to see a film that manages to balance the pace and story so well, in fact many modern films would do well to take a look at this to see "how to do a good crime film" Credit must go to Siegel for his ability to hook an audience but the whole package works well including a decent soundtrack and even minor cast roles work in the film. Even the ending is very satisfying. A must watch for fans of the genre

I dont know how many times I have seen this film, it must be approaching 10, it is the type of film that can withstand repeated viewings, all the actors perform brilliantly, particularly Walter Matthau and Joe Don Baker
I like the fact that a dust crop flyer (Walter Matthau) can outsmart the best the Mafia can throw at him. I suspect I will probably watch it a few more times before I die.

Walter Matthau (Charley Varrick) and his gang rob a bank which unknown to them is run by the mob.The mob promptly sends a ruthless hitman brilliantly played by Joe Don Baker(polite but nasty southerner -pipe smoking, white suit and all) after Varrick and his unstable partner.Another familiar role Andy Robinson excels in(remember Scorpio the psycho in Dirty Harry). The film remains tense and nail biting even after all these years. A great Movie of the period that still remains fresh.A must for any collector.

You do not need to have heard about the actor, Walter Matthau, to enjoy this move. One of the really good ones from back in the seventies..A really good script, and great and enjoyable actors, makes this film one of the " must have " for all your filmfans out there..ENJOY !!
