The often difficult second studio album...
on 12 June 2006
"Hopes and Fears" was the top album of 2004 for me (the last two tracks are my favourites), and I had high expectations for this follow up album. Whilst he first single from the album, "Is It Any Wonder?", was undeniably Keane, I found it somewhat lacking; almost formulaic. Having now listened to the entire album a number of times, I feel deflated... Disappointed. Don't get me wrong; there are moments of sheer brilliance but, overall, something is missing. Tom's vocals are superb, as always, but not one of the tracks resonated with me. Keane have taken a slightly darker turn with this album, and that's no bad thing. But where are the memorable tunes? "Iron Sea" tries hard but it never quite reaches the dizzy heights attained by the band's first effort. Lyrically, this is possibly the better of the two though. Sadly, for me at least, "Under the Iron Sea" is not the album I was hoping it would be. Maybe it's a grower? [3.5 / 5]
